How to Open a Volvo with a Dead Key Fob
Getting into a Volvo whose key fob is not working is an evolving landscape, but we have what you need on this page! And until 2025 it starts with a mechanical key.

Retrieving the mechanical key
Three key fob or remote key or remote control styles are in play for Volvo. With new ownership and a redesign of the XC-90 in 2016 and spreading into other models as they are updated, comes a new key fob style.
It should be noted that in 2021, a smart phone app became available for Volvo models and can be used to open and start these vehicles. A key card is added beginning in 2024.
XC90
As we noted, beginning with the 2016 Volvo XC90 redesign, a new style key fob is used (right). To retrieve the mechanical key or key blade, look for a slide lever on the top of the key ring end of the fob. This will free the front cover, which needs to be removed.
To do this, push the cover slightly down and away from the key ring end. It can then be pulled up and out, exposing the mechanical key. The key blade can then be lifted out.
The key holes on most models may not be immediately visible, but help with that can be found below.
EX30, EX90
The new (2025) Volvo EX30 and EX90 electric models do not use a mechanical key, but instead feature a rechargeable key tag (left) and an accessory key card (right). The instructions for their use when their charge is low are below.
Note that other new Volvo EVs have a key tag as well, but these are an accessory to the standard key fob described above.
Pre-2016
With the previous generation Volvo key fobs, the is pulled away from the fob rather easily. Slide the spring loaded catch on the back of Remote Key (remote control or ‘clicker’) to the side. Pull the key blade straight out of the remote key. On some models, the lock cylinder (keyhole) at the back of the door handle will be visible. If so, use the key blade to unlock the door. See below if the key hole is hidden.
With the first generation Remote Key, a similar spring loaded catch will be found on the top of the fob, on the key ring end. As with the fob above, slide the catch to the side and pull the mechanical key away. Again, the lock cylinder (keyhole) at the back of the door handle may or may not be visible. See below if the key hole is hidden.
Getting Inside
Note: Unlocking the vehicle with the mechanical key will set off the alarm. Following the start procedure will also turn off the alarm.
EX30, EX90
Two of the latest Volvo EVs, the EX30 and EX90, have touch spots to use if the key tag charge is depleted. Either the key tag of key card can be used. The EX30 uses a spot on the driver’s door pilar about half way to the roof (far right). The spot on the EX90 is the front part of the door handle (right). Hold the key tag or key card flat to the spot until the vehicle unlocks.
Note that the key card can only be used in this way…
XC90, EC40, EX40
In the Volvo XC90 and other redesigns going forward since 2016 the key hole is also hidden, but easily found and nothing needs to be removed. Simply pull the door handle out as far as possible and the key hole is exposed, as shown in the image.
This holds for the new generation (2025) of Volvo EVs, the EC40 and EX40.
Insert the mechanical key (it may be awkward to get at) and turn it clockwise to unlock. Remove the key blade and release the handle. Pull the handle once again and you are in the car.
Pre-2016
For older Volvo models, if the keyhole at the back of the driver’s door handle is hidden, follow the next set of instructions.
Press the key blade about a half inch straight up in the hole on the underside of the keyhole cover (right), found at the back of the driver’s door handle. This action will force off the cover. If you are in the dark, you may need to feel for the hole. Yes, you must remove a piece of the car, but it is ok and necessary. Use the mechanical key in the now-exposed lock to unlock the driver’s door.
Volvo models examined include C30, C40, C70, S40, S60, S80, S90, C50, EC40, EX40, V60, V70, V90, XC40, XC60, XC70, and XC90. Model years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
