Why are there so few affordable EVs?

Inside EVs hit the nail on the head on affordable EVs in a post on X, evidently without realizing it.

They that “2024 Was a Great Year for Performance EVs” and followed with “Driving enthusiasts looking to go electric have more choices than ever, although affordable options are still rare.”

Well, it seems obvious to us and presumably many others: so long as there is an obsession with performance, affordable options will, in fact, remain elusive!

Zero to 60 in 1.7 seconds or less in a Tesla Model S is absurdly fast. The very nature of an electric vehicle puts the torque directly at the wheels and make them, more than fast enough for everyday driving. Who is using the kind of performance that discussed in the article? An Emeya R with 905 horsepower and 0 to 60 in under 2.8 seconds?

And then talk about range. Lets face it, if you’re pushing the pedal to the metal any range numbers go out the window! And you don’t deserve them any more than a gas guzzling muscle car owner should complain about fuel mileage.

I drove a Polestar 2 for three years that did 0 to 600 in 4.1 seconds and for the most part is way faster than any need I ever encountered, other disturbing a new passenger. I now drive an EV that needs ~6 seconds to get to 60. It is still more than fast enough to merge into highway traffic.

Range, affordability and performance simply don’t mix. So long as the focus remains on developing the fastest EV, thr mix will never be right. The EV mix simply needs to have more options for normal everyday driving. If it can be built for speed, it surely can be built for efficiency.
