Porsche back-up start page review finds two changes

Porsche back-up start

A full review of Porsche back-up start processes results in two updates. We found changes made to Panamera, Cayenne and Taycan models and the new Macan EV gets a Panamera match.

Back start procedures are made necessary by the batteries in key fobs dying.

Panamera and Macan EV

The Panamera continues the use of a dummy key in the ignition in 2017 through 2023. However, if the fob’s battery is dead, a new process is needed, and includes the use of a back up location for the fob.

The key fob is set down, buttons up, in the compartment in the front of the center console to the left of the cup holders (right). Turn the ignition dummy key to the start position and back to off. Turn the dummy key back to the start position a second time and the vehicle will start.

In 2024, a new process is introduced to Panamera models that also applies to the Macan EV. The models use a start/stop or power button. There is a compartment at the front of the center console storage area. This is where the key fob down with the buttons up. It appears to be on its side in the image (right). Ignore this. The vehicle will start as normal.

Cayenne and Taycan models

Beginning in 2020, Cayenne and Taycan models use a spot in the cup holders as a back up location. Specifically the back of the left cup holder. They also employ a start/stop or power button.

The key fob must be held against the back wall of the cup holder with the buttons facing forward (right). Press the power button while stepping on the brake to start the vehicle as normal.

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys — or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them — that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares — even though the car had tried to warn you.

Our goal is to help you feel safe – and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible – rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages — without roadside assistance.
