Our Porsche symbols page is at last finished and posted. It is automatically fully updated through 2025, but it the process, we added 32 warning symbols and indicators that were not previously in our system.
As is more often than not the case, the majority of the symbols are simply unnecessary re-arrangements of pre-existing symbols. The number also includes nearly a dozen found in the gray-scale portion of the page, showing symbols that are simply inactive and awaiting use.
For instance, Porsche uses the two images on the right for cruise control and adaptive cruise control. We’ve included to the far right only the green versions — they actually exist in multiple colors. Next to them are existing versions that could easily have been used instead.
There are however, a couple of very new and intriguing systems in some of the later models, including an egress warning. This system uses the same equipment that does blind spot monitoring and warns a driver about to open the car door to get out (egress) that there is movement from behind and to the side. The symbol is the first of its kind we’ve seen, although we are aware that Tesla has a system that actually won’t allow a door to be opened in similar circumstances, and only places a warning message on the center screen.
Porsche also has an emergency stop feature that features its own set of indicators and warning symbols. The system monitors the activity of the driver and the vehicle and can bring the vehicle to a stop if the system detects that the driver is no longer in control. It will then automatically trigger an emergency 911 call. Vehicles from other manufacturers will also bring a vehicle to a halt and dial 911 should the driver become unresponsive, but its the first to get its own indicators.
As we did with Mini, we take some solace in that Porsche did not add a dizzying number of drive mode indicators, which every other manufacturer has been seemingly hell bent on doing.
Regardless, it remains a frustration to have to add so many new symbols when there are already versions that could be used. We continue to encourage all manufacturers to recycle existing symbols and not add more burden to their drivers.
