A review of Land Rover back-up open procedures finds new models

Land Rover back-up open

A full review of Land Rover back-up open processes results in the addition of three new models but only a single new open option. And not all three models share the process.

Back-up open procedures are made necessary by the batteries in key fobs dying. On rare occasions radio interference from other sources may also block a key fob’s signal.

New Range Rover models

Land Rover now offers what the company calls the New Range Rover, the New Range Rover Sport and the New Range Rover Evoque. While the Evoque continues to use a previous back up open option, the Range Rover and Sport models feature a new location for the key hole.

Its not at all clear why moving the key hole location was necessary. The handles are nearly identical. To the right is the original with the key hole on the right. The newest version at the far right has the key hole in the center.

The door handles are flush to the body and the lock cylinder is hidden behind it. To get at the key hole with either version, the front of the handle needs to be pressed which will push out the rear of the handle. Pull the entire handle out to the fully deployed position.

Once you have exposed the lock cylinder, use the mechanical key to unlock the driver’s door. This will set off the alarm, which will shut off once the vehicle is started.

Smart keys

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys — or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them — that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares — even though the car had very likely tried to warn you.

Our goal is to help you feel safe — and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible — rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages — without roadside assistance.

Our back-up open page covering Land Rover models can be seen here.
