Opel Symbols

Our Opel symbols page update is now complete, an update that added 15 warning lights, symbols and/or indicators. The page now holds over 140 images.

Of the additions, only 5 are actually new to our collection. The company uses many of the same symbols employed by sister company Vauxhall.

Not surprisingly, Opel is the second we’ve seen to feature an Active Emergency Braking symbol following Vauxhall. It appears if the system has been deactivated or if a fault has been detected. Further, a warning message is displayed in the driver information center. A common “fault” is dirty sensors and/or cameras.

A surprise from the company is a new symbol for what it calls Semi-adaptive Cruise Control. The surprise is the use of the word Semi since we could find no actual difference between the semi-adaptive system and those simply known as adaptive.

The company also followed Vauxhall with the Passenger Air Bag Activated symbol (right). It is somewhat confusing here as well, as it is shown with a strike through. And it does not mean that the air bag has deployed, but that it is available to be deployed in case of an accident, again despite the strike though.

Otherwise, new symbols connected to lane keeping, speed limiting and vehicle detection are variations on pre-existing symbols, as can be seen to the right.

So we repeat again that it is a frustration to continually add new symbols when there are pre-existing versions that could be used. This only confuses drivers.

We continue to encourage all manufacturers to recycle existing symbols and not add more burden to their drivers.

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym or abbreviation.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble — a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

Our page covering Opel dashboard symbols, and its over 140 entries, can be seen here.

Remember that only proper service and repair procedures will ensure the safe and reliable operation of your car. In addition, proper safety procedures and precautions, such as the use of safety goggles, the right tools and the equipment should be followed at all times to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety.

Technology is always changing and what is current and accurate today may be literally out-of-date and inaccurate tomorrow. And when it comes to the current state of flux in the auto industry, nothing is more true.
