Dodge ads hit at soulless, self driving cars

Dodge introduced its first electric vehicle (EV), the Charger, and on brand, markets the car on its performance. But what stands out in the advertising is the direct hit on the “soulless, self driving sleep pods” presented by other manufacturers.

Its a clever tactic aimed squarely at Tesla, although they are not alone chasing self driving. The timing is great and we can only imagine unintended as Tesla is currently under the gun due to the current perception of Tesla’s CEO. With both owners and buyers currently running from Tesla, there are fortunately lots of options in the EV space these days.

Regardless, Dodge has a point. For those of us not ready to give up on driving, the idea of the car doing the driving for us is difficult to imagine. Of course, self driving remains an option and not a requirement in cars with the technology available, so no one is forced give up the wheel.

For those who are ready, “soulless, self driving sleep pods” can be seen as dead on. Make no mistake, there are advantages to self driving in heavy traffic and for those with disabilities. However, its safe to say that the majority of drivers prefer to trust their instincts on the road rather than computer algorithms.

As to the performance side, we’ve already argued that the EV space is already crowded with car makers trying to outdo each other with speed and power. What is needed to truly expand the market are simpler, evenly powered and lower priced options.

But Dodge is on to something with their ad strategy.
