Changes to Rivian back-up open and start offers a 2025 surprise

Rivian back-up open and start

We have assembled our first Rivian back-up open and start, the lack of which was an oversight that we were surprised to discover. In any case, 2025 models offer a back-up surprise. Back-up open and start processes are made necessary if and when the battery in the key fob dies.

Through 2024 the Rivian R1S and R1T models used a key card and in some cases a key band as a back-up to the key fob (above or right). However, in 2025 offered up a major change.

Beginning in 2025, the key fob itself can activate the sensor on the door handle that unlocks the vehicle. Also, the sensor that allows the car to start is moved from the inside door trim to the left charge pad found at the front of the center console. They key card can be used in both locations as well.

Certainly, the company’s smart phone app can be used across the board as back up to the key fob when the fob’s battery is dead. However, the fob does not include a mechanical key or a key hole in the driver’s door. We strongly urge Rivian owners to carry a key card at all times.

Further, vehicles communicate with phones using Bluetooth and many phones disable Bluetooth when the phone’s battery is low. This is a further encouragement to carry the key card!

Finally, we are not aware of any actual change in the fob’s electronics and intend to test the fob in earlier Rivian models to see if it can activate the back-up spots.

You can see the Rivian back-up open and start pages here and here, respectively.
