Kia HV battery care tips include charging to 100%!

HV Battery care tips

The Kia Access app was finally made available about a week ago for the Kia Niro, and I completed the connection to the vehicle a few days later. However, a big surprise in the app were some HV battery care tips that include charging to 100% at least once a month! (The HV stands for High Voltage.)

Check out the screen shot.

As you can see, it also suggests charging to 100% if the charge level drops below 20%. I rarely let it go that low.

I’ve never seen a recommendation like it anywhere, and we’ve discussed this at length in multiple posts. A new search confirmed this. I did see that a lithium iron phosphate battery can handle 100% and maybe even benefit from it, but the Kia uses a lithium ion polymer chemistry.

For the record, when I say the app was finally made available, the previous owner remained associated with the car and I had not bothered to chase down a solution. Then Kia announced that the Tesla charge network is now available, and through the app. It took a few days to get the company to clear ownership.

Sure seems like something the Kia dealer I bought it from should have handled. But automotive sales departments are not known for going above and beyond.

In the meantime, I will occasionally charge my Niro to 100%.
