Maserati rewrites the book on back-up open procedures

Back-up open

A review of Maserati back-up open procedures finds big changes. Key holes are now hidden across the line and, in fact, the line up itself is all new. Back-up entry options are made necessary for those moments when the battery in the key fob dies.

Gone are the Ghibli, Levante, and Quatroport. In are the Grecale, GranTourismo, GranCabrio and GT2S. The MC20 remains.

All models use a new key fob which is an improvement over the original. The release for the mechanical key is shown with the arrow on the right in the image on the left. Slide the release away from the center and pull the key ring to retrieve the mechanical key.

However, with the new models come new headaches for drivers with a dead key fob battery. A small cap hides the key hole on the Grecale, GranTourismo, and GranCabrio. There is a slot in the cap that will accept the mechanical key, after which it is to be turned to line up the marks on the cap with those on the car. Then the cap can be removed and the key used.

In GT2S and MC20 models, the key hole is not only covered, its under the floor beneath the door pilar behind the door! The cover needs to be unscrewed and removed to use the key.

Good luck getting to it!

The Ghibli, Levante, and Quatroport models offered the simple option to use the key in an exposed key hole. Simpler times…

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys — or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them — that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares — even though the car had tried to warn you. Getting in your car with a dead key fob requires the work our posts and videos describe.

Our goal is to help you feel safe — and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible — rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages — without roadside assistance.
