How to Open a Mini with a Dead Key Fob

This page holds all of the emergency open or back-up open procedures needed for Mini vehicles if the battery in the key fob dies or if there are electrical signals interfering with the fob.

Retrieving the Mechanical Key

For early Mini models, press the button on the back of the remote control (or ‘clicker’) and pull the key ring end to remove the integrated key. The integrated or mechanical key can be used to unlock the driver’s door, which will likely have a visible key hole.

With the rounded style key fob seen to the left, has a button on the “neck”. Push it while pulling the key ring with your free hand to retrieve the mechanical key.

A newer fob introduced in 2025 hides the key inside the fob’s case. Here, you’ll find a button on the side as shown, Pressing it releases the back cover allowing it to slide away.

This reveals the mechanical key (far right), which can then be pulled away.

Opening Your Mini

Mini Cooper Hardtops were first to use the style shown to the right, which is quite unique. It then moved to the SE EV in 2022 and now is found across the product line.

A small oval-shaped cap at the rear of the handle must be removed to expose the key hole. Look for a small slot underneath the handle near the cap (arrow). Slip the mechanical key into the hole as far as it will go, which is about an inch. Nothing obvious happens, but the cap is now free to remove. Slip a fingernail anywhere in the groove and the cap will fall away.

Yes, pulling off another piece of a car, but it is necessary, and safe.

Now slip the key into the now exposed key hole and turn to unlock the car. Remove the key before pulling the handle. Pull the handle, and you’re in. Check out the video below.

Newer (2025 and later) Mini John Cooper Works models feature the same door handle as is found on the BMW i4. With this handle (right), lift it to the open position and insert the mechanical key into the key hole found on the now exposed right side and turn to unlock.
