How to Start a Maserati with a Dead Key Fob

This page holds all of the emergency start or back-up start procedures needed for Maserati vehicles if the battery in the key fob dies or if there are electrical signals interfering with the fob.

Starting Your Maserati

Ghibli, GranTurismo, Levante, Quattroporte

These models were first to use key less start. The back up start process is a simple one.

Touch the “nose” of the key fob to the Start / Stop button. Push the button with the fob itself while stepping on the brake as you normally would. The car will recognize the key fob and start even though the fob’s internal battery is dead.

Click here for a video rundown of the process, featuring the Ghibli.

Grecale, GranTourismo, GranCabrio, GT2S, MC20

These models were introduced in 2023 and 2024. To start these models,  you’ll need to find a key fob-shaped spot on the floor of the center console (right). With the GT2S and MC20 you’ll find a pad covering the bottom of the console which must be removed.  Pull on the tab at the back of the pad.

Once the key fob is in place, logo up, push the Start / Stop button while stepping on the brake as you normally would. Again, the car will recognize the key fob and start even though the fob’s internal battery is dead.

Models examined include Ghibli, GranTurismo, Levante, Quattroporte, Grecale, GranTourismo, GranCabrio, GT2S, and MC20. Model years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
