Regen braking

Our search for common regen braking questions turned up several that require only the following short answers.

— Does regenerative braking wear out tires faster?
Regenerative braking has no impact on vehicle’s tires. Aggressive driving and hard braking with the friction brakes can cause damage to tires.

— Should I use regenerative braking all the time?
In a word yes, and just as the answer to the next question, some braking will always exist in an electric motor. Most drivers adjust very quickly to the vehicle slowing more quickly when stepping off the accelerator and adjust for reducing pressure in the same way that varying brake pedal pressure stops a vehicle more or less quickly.

— Can regenerative braking be turned off?
Regenerative braking can be adjusted to be more or less aggressive, but some braking will always exist in an electric motor.

— Should I turn off regenerative braking in snow?
Well, as the answer to the previous question is no, it follows that regenerative braking cannot be turned off under any circumstances. Most manufacturers allow for adjusting the system’s level of regeneration, however stability control systems are more than capable of maintaining vehicle control in the snow.

— Does regenerative braking trigger brake lights?
Yes, by rule regenerative braking trigger brake lights. In fact Hyundai went through a recall because the system was failing to set off the brake lights quickly enough. Basically, regenerative braking uses the vehicles computer to determine how quickly the vehicle is slowing and how slow the vehicle is moving to trigger the brake lights.
