This symbol and system, from Smart in this case, is directly associated with Traffic Sign Recognition Systems. The system uses traffic and speed limit signs to adjust the vehicle’s speed automatically.
There is more on traffic sign recognition here. Recognition is affected by the camera’s field of view, the relative camera position and of the speed limit or traffic sign, which may cause errors in recognition of speed limits.
