Mercedes-Benz Smart cars being added to our dead key fob pages

Mercedes-Benz Smart cars

We have begun the process of adding Mercedes-Benz Smart cars to our dead key fob pages. We just finished a page with text instructions and images helping drivers get inside if the battery in the key fob has died.

And the company doesn’t make it easy or obvious. Even the Fortwo models, the original 2-seater city car, hide the key hole behind a small plug under the driver’s door handle.

The key fobs themselves are straightforward; either a typical bladed key or a flip key.

But the Fortwo was abandoned in favor of more traditional electric crossover SUVs, the Smart 1, Smart 3 and Smart 5. And here the key fobs are painful.

The first is a round, key ring-less thing whose back cover needs to be removed to find the mechanical key.

Then comes a more traditional looking fob that requires two pieces of the fob be removed to get at the mechanical key! You can see all the steps at the page linked below.

Mercedes remains an owner in partnership with China’s Geely Holdings. One of them should know better.

Getting into the newer SUVs, which have flush door handles, is relatively simple. Push the front of the handle in and pull the back of the handle out as far as it will go.

This exposes the key cylinder (right) and the door can now be unlocked. Several manufacturers now use this type of handle.

The back-up entry page can be seen here and we will work next on a back-up start page.

Technology is always changing and what is current and accurate today may be literally out-of-date and inaccurate tomorrow. And when it comes to the current state of flux in the auto industry, nothing is more true.
