In these models, first released in 2022, the key fob is placed on a mark at the bottom of the center console (right). Once the fob is placed on the spot, the vehicle can be started as normal, which in the case of these vehicles, by stepping on the brake and placing it into forward or reverse. Smart 5

The Smart 5 presents a bit of a problem. The vehicle is equipped with an NFC (Near Field Communication) key, which is a key card. The company says the back-up start option is to use either the company’s app or placing the NFC key on the charging pad at the front of the console (right). The pad location is swapped in right-hand drive models.

However, we have seen this same spot recognize the key fob itself in vehicles from other manufacturers. Key cards are easily lost or misplaced. We recommend trying this fob on this spot as a back-up. We’ll test this if we ever see a Smart 5 here in the U.S.

Models examined include the Fortwo, EQ Fortwo, Smart 1, Smart 2, and Smart 3. Model years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
