The two forms of auto brake hold

We’ve now experienced two very different forms of Auto Brake Hold, and only recently adjusted the page to reflect it, 20 different images not withstanding.

In any case, some manufacturers have the system active at all times. If the car is started, brake hold is ready to use by default. This was the case with the Polestar 2, and is likely the case through both the Polestar and Volvo product lines.

Setting the hold requires a hard brake pedal press after the vehicle has come to a stop.

The second version’s default setting is off and so the brake hold system must be activated every time the vehicle is started. This is true of the Kia Niro, and this is likely so throughout Hyundai and Kia product lines.

With this version, if the system has been activated after start-up, the hold will occur whenever the vehicle comes to a stop using the brake pedal. It will not activate if the vehicle comes to a stop on its own on a slope, where forward creep and gravity are in balance.

Special car wash notes: If brake hold is activated with the first version when coming to a stop in a automated car wash, there will be a problem with the car moving. Shifting in and out of gear should release the hold!

If the brake hold has been activated in the second version, it will require turning the system off and tapping the brake to release! (We’ve experienced this one!)
