According to InsideEVs, Chinese auto maker BYD has made a big time promise related to autonomous driving. Or at least its when cars is self parking.
If a car damages another while using its intelligent parking feature, BYD will pay for the damages. InsideEVs adds “That’s pretty much the biggest corporate flex that any car company can make.”
Except for one thing. When he was president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, stated that Volvo would accept full liability whenever one if its cars is in autonomous mode.
And that statement was made 10 years ago, in 2015, as we reported here!
This rather trumps paying for a fender bender in a parking lot, yes?
Samuelsson is currently chairman of the board of the company’s Polestar spinoff.
Of course, Volvo is no where near offering a self driving car, but what he was attempting to address remains in play: the patchwork of varying state laws and regulations on autonomy.
At the time, Samuelsson stated “The absence of one set of rules means car makers cannot conduct credible tests to develop cars that meet all the different guidelines of all 50 U.S. states, If we are to ensure a smooth transition to autonomous mobility then together we must create the necessary framework that will support this.”
Personally, I’m looking forward to car companies essentially paying for my car insurance! And why not?
