Brake dust

Just when we thought we knew everything there is to know about regenerative braking, we saw this from InsideEVs. There’s a whole new way that an EV helps improve the air we breath. Brake dust!

Or more to the point, the lack of it. The use of regenerative braking reduces brake wear and thus brake dust on the order of 80% or more.

It is well known that the use of regenerative braking in an electric vehicle (EV) allows the brake pads to last longer. That is, less wear, and the result of that wear is brake dust!

An Audi I used to drive spent most of its time with its wheels covered in that dust. This is rather common in German-built vehicles and is a bear to clean up.

But that brake dust also gets in the air and is full of harmful particles. It is high in copper, which is said to be more harmful than diesel soot.

And even if its not, does copper dust sound like something we should be breathing?

So, while you’re driving your EV, know that testing shows that your brakes will go the order of 100,000 miles before needing replacement. Assuming of course, that you a making full use of your car’s regenerative braking capability!

Plus, you’re leaving an even smaller footprint in the planet’s atmosphere.

In the least, we can be thankful that asbestos is no longer used in brake pads.
