Fuel cells

General Motors (GM) announced this week that it will halt next-generation hydrogen fuel cells development through its HYDROTEC brand. HYDROTECH is a complete hydrogen fuel cell system with the HYDROTEC power cube at its core.

GM said that the company will concentrate research and development and capital on batteries, charging technology, and EVs, which have clear traction in the market.

However, it will continue production of hydrogen fuel cells for data center and power generation through Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, which is a joint venture with Honda.

GM said it believes that hydrogen holds promise for specific high-demand industrial applications like backup power, mining, and heavy trucking along with the exploding population of data centers.

GM stated that the path to reaching a sustainable business in fuel cells in the automotive space is “long and uncertain” adding that costs remain high and infrastructure is limited. The Department of Energy (DOE) says that only 61 hydrogen refueling stations nationwide.

By comparison, the DOE says that there are more than a quarter million level 2 or faster electric vehicle (EV) charging locations.
