Review of 2026 Toyota models finds no back-up entry and start updates

Back-up entry and start

We’ve begun to gather jump start information for Toyota and Lexus electric vehicles (EVs) and it made for a good time to review back-up entry and start processes for both company’s models.

After all, if the vehicle needs a jump start, likely as not you are at least locked out!

Back-up entry and start processes are necessary for those moments when the key fob is unrecognized, usually the result of a dead battery inside the fob. There are none in any of the 2026 Toyota models.

Toyota‘s new EVs, the bZ and the earlier bZ4X, could have been an excuse to finally hide a keyhole or to go to the shift-start concept that many EV makers use today. That is, the key fob is recognized when the vehicle is entered and shifting into gear is all that is needed to start the car.

Instead, Toyota holds fast to the simplicity of a visible keyhole on the driver’s door handle for back-up entry. The company also continues to use a start/stop button, which comes to life with the touch of the back of the fob if the key fob’s battery has died.

Both are seen to the right.

Back up open and start processes, including links to video help, can be seen beginning here.
