Solid-state battery tech poised to take EV range to 800+ miles

Battery tech

An automaker in China is touting solid-state battery tech capable of nearly double the energy density of today’s best lithium-ion EV packs. As reported by Autoblog, the company, Chery, says the technology could take driving range up to and over 800 miles on a single charge.

Solid-state batteries offer a number of key advantages including the higher energy density and reduced weight while adding faster charging, improved safety, and greater durability. Lab tests confirm their new design will deliver the higher energy density while resisting puncture and thermal runaway, two problems inherent in current lithium batteries.

Chery’s adds to a short list of automakers chasing solid-state battery technology. Toyota says it will release its tech in 2027 — matching Chery‘s anticipated timeline — while Mercedes-Benz is currently demonstrating a solid-state battery pack on a prototype EQS with nearly 750 miles of range.

Thus far the only glitch is a lack of infrastructure to take advantage of the faster charging — 600-kW — capability. Regardless, fire safety, energy density and range exceeding most internal combustion engine-powered vehicles more than make up slow-moving infrastructure upgrades.
