Earlier this month, Chrysler issued a recall for 320,065 Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicles because of a risk of fire while driven or parked. This resulted in a park outside and away from structures and other vehicles recommendation.
This comes on the heels of a similar recommendation to some 200,000 BMW owners as well as 1,469 Toyota models built by BMW. These recalled vehicles are all gasoline powered, with an engine starter relay that may corrode. The Jeep vehicles have a battery pack with cells that have separator damage.
Further, owners should not charge unrepaired vehicle batteries because the risk of fire is higher in a charged battery than a depleted battery.
So, some 520,000 drivers could be looking for a clear place to park for some time. A remedy is not yet available for 228,221 Jeep Wrangler and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Plus, parts availability, or the lack thereof, has BMW conducting the recall in phases for seven different models.
Those models are the Z4, 330I, X3, X4, 530I, 430I and 230I as well as some Toyota Supra models. Model years run from 2019 through 2022.
In all cases, check your vehicle identification number at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to see if your vehicle is involved. And remember, repairs are free.
And please do check your vehicle. Fire risk is as serious as a recall can be. It puts you and others at risk with the added possibility of everyone in a building being sound asleep.
