The belief that an EV battery will fail the or lose large amounts of range remains pervasive in the general populace, beliefs that are gleefully repeated by electric vehicle (EV) detractors, particularly those with interests in the internal combustion engine and/or oil businesses.
A new study puts these beliefs to rest.
A new study by Recurrent finds that there is little reason to be concerned about either. The company was created for owners, sellers and dealerships to makes it easy to answer complex questions about electric cars.
The study finds that, across all years and models, outside of big recalls, under 4% of EV batteries have been replaced. This includes vehicles 10 years old and older.
The study also finds that the vast majority of current models maintain 90% or more of their range capacity. See the chart below.
The study notes the recalls of Chevrolet Bolt EVs and Hyundai Kona EVs. It does not consider a current recall of high-voltage batteries in Jeep hybrids.
The study finds that the highest rate of battery replacements come from the very first generation of EVs on the road. These cars are now 14+ years old and were built on early technology. They expect that “as battery management systems improve and we migrate to newer battery chemistries, we should see even better battery life and fewer replacements in modern EVs.”
Recurrent aims to provide more transparency and confidence in electric car transactions to help accelerate the overall adoption of electric vehicles.
