The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a spate of recalls in the last two days, but the most serious of the recalls hit Volkswagen Group pretty hard. And the ID.4 sits at the center of two of them.
First up is a recall of some 2023-2024 ID.4, which have been found to possibly contain misaligned electrodes that can cause a battery fire. The announcement goes on to advise owners to park outside immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight until the repair is complete.
Also, owners are advised not to use Level 3 DC chargers and to limit the maximum charge of the battery to 80%, again until the repair is complete.
And another battery fire risk involves Bentley, a part of Volkswagen Group. Some 2023 Bentayga Hybrid vehicles high voltage battery may overheat while charging. This one is evidently a software issue and dealers will update the high voltage battery software, and replace the high voltage battery if necessary. However, there is no park outside warning.
The notification goes on to say that Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning January 26, 2025. It likely is meant to say 2026…
And last but not least, Volkswagen is recalling certain 2026 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and ID.4 vehicles because incorrect wheel bolts can allow a wheel to detach from the vehicle. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 30, 2026.
