With a revue of 2026 models, Hyundai emergency open procedures now includes a back-up open process for the Ioniq 9. It turns out to match that of the Kia EV9. All other models remain as they were in 2025.
Back-up or emergency open procedures become necessary in the event of the battery in the key fob becoming depleted or because of local radio interference.
In the Ioniq 9, getting access to the key hole behind the vehicle’s flush door handle is needed in order to make use of the mechanical key, which, unfortunately, is provided separate from the key fob. This makes it likely to be lost (fortunately for Hyundai owners, there are digital key options available).
In any case, press the front part of the door handle inward and then pull the door handle out fully. This exposes a cover at the back and under the handle which must be removed (right). Remember that if the key fob was working properly, the handle would have extended when the driver approached.
In creating a video for the EV9, we were able to remove the cover using a finger nail to get beneath it and rotating it towards the back of the car. The key hole is then exposed (far right) for use with the mechanical key.
