King Crab

GMC‘s Hummer gave us CrabWalk mode, and now adds an enhancement the company calls King Crab mode.

In CrabWalk (right), the rear wheels are turned at the same angle as the front wheels, which enables the vehicle to move diagonally. Also, the mode can be engaged at speeds less than 2 km/h (1.2 mph).

With King Crab mode it allows the driver to turn the rear wheels at a greater angle than the front wheels. In fact, The rear wheels steer in the opposite direction as the front wheels and can be engaged at lower vehicle speeds less than 32 km/h (20 mph).

The symbol itself (right) is still a crab, but a fiercer-looking crab. A King Crab!

Both modes are intended to improve maneuverability for specific off road situations. However, the only demonstrations we’ve seen have been on dry pavement.

Note that if the vehicle speed reaches higher than about 40 km/h (25 mph) for more than 10 seconds, the vehicle will automatically exit the crab modes and turn on Automatic Mode.
