The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) opened March by reporting that monthly motor fuels prices were down year-on-year for February.
March will surely look very, very different.
The average price for regular motor gasoline was $2.91 per gallon. This is up 3.5% from January but down 6.8% from February 2025. The price for diesel fuel rose slightly from $3.68 in February 2025 to $3.72 in February 2026.
By region, year-over-year gasoline prices down across the board, with the Rocky Mountain region seeing the largest drop of 11.7% to $2.66/gallon. The Midwest followed with a 9.6% dip to $2.67/gallon.
Meanwhile the average price for diesel no. 2 was $3.72 in February 2026, up nearly 6% from January.
However, since the latest Middle East, prices at the pump reportedly rose 14% in a single week. It seems unlikely that this will moderate at all in the short term and BTS is likely to show major increases in its next report.
Will there be a surge in electric vehicle sales??
