A new feature just added to Google Maps will include battery range predictions and trip planning for over 350 Android Auto EV models. The update adds AI-powered EV charging features to Maps.
Once a destination is set, Maps will recommend when and where to charge based on the EV model and battery level, which must be input manually, resulting in an estimated arrival battery level and an updated ETA based on charging time.
Google is combining AI with advanced energy models that analyze car details — like weight and battery size — alongside Maps’ real-time information about traffic, road elevation and weather. This will allow intelligent trip-planning features to most U.S. EVs soon.
The system is being rolled out now on hundreds of EV models in the U.S. across more than 15 brands. More will be added soon.
Kia is on the list of manufacturers that will connected to the feature. The Niro has Android Auto built in, but I have not seen an update. The car requires that a compatible smart phone be plugged to activate Android Auto, so, after adding my car to maps on the phone, I gave it a try.
Putting in a hypothetical trip to Philadelphia, no additional information was available (image below). Likely as not, Kia will need to supply an infotainment center update. If and when it comes through, I’ll report back on the feature’s usability.
