BYD ups the EV anti with the Super e-Platform

China’s BYD has launched what it calls the Super e-Platform, which re-writes “current” electric vehicle (EV) technology. The company says the tech brings the battery, motor, power supply, air conditioning, and other components up to a full 1000V.

Among the upgraded components are batteries that can be flash charged, a 30,000 RPM motor, and new silicon carbide (SiC) power chips, known to handle high heat loads. The chips have a voltage rating of up to 1500V.

The upgrades result in a charging power of 1 megawatt (1000 kW) and a peak charging speed of 2 kilometers (~1.25 miles) per second, making it the fastest for mass-produced vehicles.

Five minutes of charging results in 400 kilometers (~250 miles) of range, easily several times faster than anything available in North America.

To achieve this, BYD upgraded battery components to create ultra-fast ion channels, reducing the battery’s internal resistance by 50%.

The charging current reaches 1000A, and the charging rate achieves 10C, both of which are claimed as world records.

The Super e-Platform also delivers a single-module single-motor power of 580 kW and a top speed over 300 km/h (over 180 miles/hr).

Infrastructure

As to charging infrastructure, Lian Yubo, Executive VP of BYD and President of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, stated: “BYD has self-developed the world’s first all-liquid-cooled Megawatt Flash Charging terminal system, with a maximum output capacity of up to 1360kW.

“Additionally, BYD‘s unique ‘dual-gun charging’ technology can instantly transform existing supercharging piles into flash charging ones and fast charging piles into supercharging ones. Our world-first ‘intelligent voltage boost’ charging technology is fully compatible with public fast charging piles, ensuring users can charge at any station.”

The company intends to build over 4,000 ‘Megawatt Flash Charging stations’ in China, the only country where the technology will be available. It can be had on the Han L and Tang L models, which are now open for pre-order.

BYD is a high-technology company with a focus on energy acquisition, storage, and application.
