We saw an item in InsideEVsand had to do some digging. A Chinese auto maker has teamed up with a local tech company to create headlights that can project full color movies on a wall or screen in front of them up to 100 inches wide.
This was seen at the Huawei Qiankun Technology Conference at last week’s Beijing Auto Show.
And its not just a novelty, but rather an off shoot of what the tech is designed to do. The headlights are actual projectors that can shoot a virtual crosswalk for pedestrians, navigation arrows and other visual safety prompts on to the road.
The headlights are made by Huawei Technologies, a provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices and is said to be the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer. The car maker is BAIC Motor Corp. Ltd., which manufactures passenger vehicles under brands like Beijing, ARCFOX, and joint ventures with Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.
The feature is currently available in the Stelato S9 sedan, which is a high-end, full-size luxury electric sedan jointly developed by Huawei and BAIC. It wears a Huawei badge.
In the meantime here in the U.S., we’re only now seeing headlights that can adjust beam patterns and not just turn high beams on and off. The West, and the U.S. in particular, is ceding auto technology advancements — including and maybe particularly EVs — to China.
