Change is in the local wind as there is no longer access to “charging at home” for the Kia Niro. A forced move is also forcing a charging protocols reset.
Its back to hitting the Level 3 networks, and first up was a DC charger on a parkway. To date, charging at DC stations has been done below 30° F, but it was just over 50° F yesterday, and my expectations were high. And unmet.
The Niro is supposed to be capable 90 kW charging, but it did not exceed 60 kW. It also held that level for most of the charge and I was prepared to go beyond 80% (no one waiting) if it held at or near 60 kW.
It did not. At about 78% the charge rate began a rapid decline until it reached 22 kW at 80% (right). I pulled the plug. It is certainly expected that the car will charge at a higher rate either at “better” stations or in warmer weather.
On the plus side, the car charged to an extrapolated 252 miles of range, which is back to its EPA rating, not at the excessively low levels seen over the winter.
Looking forward to some truly warmer weather and recovery of the 300+ miles range seen last summer.
