Low Coolant Warning Symbols — electric vehicles

High voltage battery coolant lowBattery coolant fluid level lowThese are all Low Coolant Warning Indicator symbols used by electric vehicles (EVs). The symbols appear as batteries with a wavy line at the bottom and are displayed in red.

Pure EV and hybrid batteries get hot and require a cooling system that, much like a typical internal combustion engine requires a cooling fluid that may need topping off occasionally. Add coolant to the system as soon as possible.

The elongated battery seen in the second image is often, but not always, used to differentiate from the 12-volt start battery,

Temperature Warning Light SymbolLucid seemingly threw the entire symbols regime under the bus with the use of the symbol to the left to indicate low coolant in their sedans. It is one of the original symbols that has to now been used to indicate an actual overheat in an internal combustion engine.

Low Coolant IndicatorThe symbol to the left, also featuring a wavy line at the bottom, is the traditional Low Coolant symbol is use for decades for internal combustion engines. But, as of 2024, it may be found in Kia hybrid vehicles and would be displayed when the coolant used by the vehicle’s electrical inverter is low.

It appears as a more traditional automotive radiator in yellow/amber/orange.

Driving without sufficient amount of coolant for a prolonged period of time can cause serious problems with a vehicle’s electrical equipment or the high voltage battery itself.
