U.S. EV charge ports approach 250,000

We spotted a report that the Department of Energy (DOE) was showing that available EV charge ports had exceeded 250,000, so we ran over to the site to check. The number we found was 249,786, but close enough!

In truth, the number of ports for electric vehicle (EV) charging could easily move up and down as stations go down for maintenance or some older stations are simply shut down.

Regardless, the numbers suggest that EV drivers now find it easier than ever finding electrons. I can personally attest to the CCS network being far more robust than just two years ago.

Add to that the ability of most drivers with CCS connectors can likely get access to Tesla‘s NACS network and you have a far more balanced fast charge network availability. Tesla drivers have long had access to CCS adapters.

By the numbers, there are 72,519 DC fast charge ports at 15,015 locations, 176,537 Level 2 ports at 66,961 stations and 711 Level 1 ports at 159 station locations.

Curiously, looking at the three levels individually at the same DOE site and adding those numbers results in one less charge port and a full 1,574 more locations! We’re not sure if any of that matters, but it would be good if their own math would come together!

We don’t actually know this but Level 1 chargers are likely left over from the very beginnings of the EV “revolution”. However, the market’s current condition suggests more of an insurrection rather than a full blown revolution.
