Diesel price hits all time high

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released monthly motor fuels prices for September 2026 and among the findings were that the price of diesel no. 2 reached a new all-time high in September 2026 at $6.29 per gallon. That is up 9.3% from the previous all-time high reached in June 2022, up 15.2% from August 2026, and up a full 67.8% from September 2025.

As to gasoline prices, the average price for regular motor gasoline was $4.36 per gallon in September; up 7.3% from August 2026 and up 37.6% from September 2025.

September fuel pricesYear over year, the Gulf Coast region saw the largest increase at 42.2% to $3.86/gallon while the West Coast was least affected by percentage, seeing a rise of 31.1%, to $5.54. For the rest of the country, year-over-year changes were by region: Rocky Mountain: up 39.6% to $4.44, Central Atlantic: up 37.4% to $4.37, New England: up 40.0% to $4.31, Midwest: up 38.3% to $4.17 and Lower Atlantic: up 39.8% to $4.07.
