Almost as a exclamation point on yesterday’s post on added technology as an annoyance in the home and the car, my primary laptop just plain died a few hours later.
So, I now find myself re-creating my computer workspace on a new machine, while waiting for an adapter to help with transferring data from the old digital hard drive.
And there we have the nub of the problem. I don’t know a soul that hasn’t been through this with a computer, and as the car becomes more and more a rolling computer, isn’t this the primary fear? You’re driving down the road and suddenly everything shuts down.
This is not an obsolescence problem, as was described with home technology. Its software usually glitches, which we already see in the automotive world. Recalls today are dominated by software failures. Back up cameras that won’t work. Instrument panels that go dark. Entertainment centers that need resetting (I’ve dealt with this one).
Most manufacturers already suggest that car be restarted if a warning pops up that involves a system that is purely electronic. An actual reboot…
It just can not be a surprise that drivers are looking for more simplicity in their cars.
And in the interim, as I get my new computer set up and my data fully recovered (I hope!), I may go dark for a day or two.
