DC charging of the Niro gives mixed results

In the last post, I warned of the excess “charges” resulting from the use of a ChargePoint Level 3 charger. Now the overall results of the latest DC charging of the Niro.

Charge inputIt has primarily been charged on a Level 2 charger, but there have been about 10 needs and/or opportunities for the use of Level 3 DC charging. During these sessions, the Niro has never accepted more that 56 kW from chargers, despite supposedly being capable of upwards of 100 kW.

Most of the DC charges in question occurred during very, very cold weather, so these get a pass. But these last two are in the 50 to 60 F range, so there should be no excuse. And the ChargePoint and Electrify America (EA) stations produced the Winter modesame results.

There is not an option to condition the battery for charging, but there is Winter Mode, which is designed to warm it in cold weather. I set this for the ~5 minute drive to the EA station.

It made no difference at all. The picture shows input at 53 kW, which climbs a little to 56 kW. The good news is this holds until about 75% charge, when it quickly drops all the way to 23 Charge resultkW.

I will try Winter Mode again further in advance for the next charge.

The final good news is that range has recovered to 275 miles at about 60 F! That is extrapolated from the 220 miles shown at 80%, when I shut it down. I’d have gone further if the charge rate had held.
