As an addendum to a post just a few days ago, an email from Electrify America (EA) came through with the message that “A station you visited now offers time-of-use pricing…”
Time-of-use, or TOU, pricing makes logical sense — as electric suppliers charge lower rates during off peak hours — this was truly news to me. In fact the email called this” a new way to help you save based on the time you plug in and power up” so it is likely simply new to EA.
Note that the screen shot shows rates for “EA Pass Pricing”. EA offers a Pass+ membership, which includes a $7/month fee. So I verified with EA that the pricing shown is, in fact, for all customers. Pass+ customers get 25% off all the rates shown.
As to the actual price, dropping from $0.64 kWh to $0.44 kWh is a drop of over 30%. Further, the company began TOU pricing in 2025 starting in Southern California.
For additional follow through, I did a random check of stations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California. Only stations in Pennsylvania did NOT offer TOU pricing, and the prices vary from state-to-state. The New Jersey screenshot shows a more complex set of variables (below left).
This then prompted a search of Tesla and its policies, and sure enough Tesla offers dynamic and TOU pricing, as well as dynamic or “Live Pricing” pricing at its Supercharger stations. You’ll find TOU pricing in the Tesla app.
However, its important to understand dynamic pricing, as in this case, Tesla’s network adjusts rates in real-time based on how busy a station is! This likely means a rate increase when busy. The station will show the real-time pricing.
So, when evaluating charging costs, we now get to consider off-peak rates, a bonus for those of us without access to home chargers. And when travelling, remember that a busy Tesla station may give your bill a bump…
