While they remain high big time year over year, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that motor fuel prices dropped in July compared to June. The average price for regular motor gasoline was $3.93 per gallon; down 2.9%, while the average price for diesel no. 2 was $4.96, down 1.4%.
Year-over-year changes tell a far different story. The average price for regular motor gasoline was up 25.8% from July 2025 and the average price for diesel no. 2 was up 31.1% from July 2025.
Regionally year-over-year increases for gasoline hit New England the hardest, with a 30.2% rise, while prices on the West Coast rose the least, 22.5%. However, the $4.94 average price per gallon on the West Coast already far exceeds that of all other sectors. Only the Central Atlantic sees a per gallon average price of over $4/gallon, $4.02, which is up 28.1%.
New England’s average price was $3.93/gallon; the Rocky Mountain region, $3.88 (up 24.0%); the Lower Atlantic, $3.72 (up 27.4%); the Midwest: $3.71 (up 23.6%); and the Gulf Coast: $3.51 (up 28.7%).
