Automatic Transmission Fault IndicatorAuto transmission check indicatorThese are Automatic Transmission (AT) Warning Indicator symbols. The first symbol indicates an electrical, rather than a mechanical,  problem with the transmission. Continuing to drive could cause damage to the transmission that would likely be very expensive to repair.

Transmission fault indicatorThis also is a Transmission Fault Indicator. It is made to resemble a transmission if seen from the side in yellow/amber. The manufacturer who uses this symbol states that the vehicle can be driven carefully for a short while.

Critical Fault IndicatorNon-critical Fault IndicatorThese are Critical and Non-critical Fault Indicator symbols found in electric vehicles (EVs). It will appear yellow/amber at the first sign of a problem. Power may be reduced automatically, but the vehicle can be driven safely for service.

Keyless Ignition Headaches

The development of hybrid vehicles all but required a change in the way a car is started. A hybrid deems itself “Ready” (or not) with the ignition on, and the gasoline engine is started with a press of the gas pedal. Thus were born keyless ignition, or push button start, systems. Well what are perceived as the coolest gadgets ultimately will always find their way into everything eventually, and these systems are no exception. But what looks and feels cool comes at a price.

Which is a dead key fob, or remote control, battery. Most of us have used keyless entry for years, unlocking our cars with the touch of a button. But in order to start the vehicle without a key, the remote control must send out and/or receive a radio signal continuously, or nearly so. As a result, the life expectancy of the battery in the key fob can be as little as 12 months. Thousands upon thousands of drivers are caught unprepared by this in their busy, busy lives every year.

The industry sees this as little more than a trifle, despite the number of calls that come in to service departments and roadside assistance centers every day. They wash their hands of the problem noting that the vehicle does, in fact, notify drivers when the key fob battery is weakening, and that there is a back up plan for getting in and getting moving even when the fob battery has died.

Why It’s Still a Problem

However:
– The back-up instructions are treated as an afterthought in owner’s manuals, buried inside what are today 500+ page tomes.
– And the manual is necessary because, there are no standard means for starting the vehicle when this happens. Not between manufacturers and sometimes not within product lines!
– There is also no standard means for retrieving a hard key to get into the vehicle from manufacturer to manufacturer.
– And for five vehicle manufacturers, there is no visible keyhole in the driver’s door for that hard key!

The disrespect for drivers is appalling. You can well bet that the designers of those hidden keyholes have NEVER talked a panicked driver through the process of prying off a piece of a $50,000 vehicle in order to find key cylinder on a cold winter night in a dark parking lot. A very, very vulnerable position that you do not want to be in, or have a loved one in. And this so that a single square inch of the vehicle can be more attractive!

And once inside, two manufacturers have six different methods for starting the vehicle, and another has four. Most have at least two starting methods. A driver will be lucky indeed to get someone on the phone at a dealership – assuming they are open – who knows how to start a particular model.

There are many good reasons for keyless start systems: theft deterrence, convenience, even pain relief for some. But let’s standardize the back-up plans and give drivers a break! Yes, satellite services can open and start a car – if the service is available and paid for. It is no excuse for the schizophrenic approach now employed by the industry.

Rear Differential Temperature Indicator

Differential Temperature

Rear Differential Temperature IndicatorThis is a a Rear Differential Temperature Indicator symbol. If this light is on while the engine is running, it indicates that the oil in the rear differential is too hot. If you are driving, reduce your speed and stop at the nearest safe place. Allow the differential to cool down and the light to go out. The vehicle will then be safe to drive.

If the light recurs, stop again and allow time again for the differential to cool down. If overheating continues to occur or if the light does not go out at all, call your dealer, service center or roadside service for assistance.

All Wheel Drive Trouble Indicators

All Wheel Drive

All Wheel Drive Trouble IndicatorAWD Trouble Indicator 2These are the All Wheel Drive (AWD) Trouble Indicator symbols. These lights will be on when All-Wheel Drive is disengaged and the drive mechanism is switched to Front Wheel Drive for maintenance or if there is a problem with the system. The car can be safely operated in front wheel drive.  With the exception of the red symbol below, all these symbols appear as yellow/amber.

eAWD IndicatoreAWD indicatorOf course, if the vehicle is electric (EV), it gets its own indicators. The only reason to do this is that the All-Wheel Drive system is actually electric. In yellow/amber/orange, the electric AWD system is limited, and will turn off when the system is working normally.. In red, there is a malfunction. A good repair shop or your dealer will be needed.

All wheel drive failureThe symbol to the left also includes a stick figure image meant to look like four wheels with the front wheels turned to the right. All these lights incorporate the AWD acronym and may include an exclamation point. Malfunctions may be indicated by the system before a real problem is obvious, but don’t waste time. Have the system checked out as soon as possible.

These symbols will flash if the vehicle is fitted with tires of differing diameters or if the air pressure in any of the tire drops dramatically. The AWD system will be unavailable, but the main front or wheel drive wheels will operate normally. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light will also very likely be lit, if the vehicle is equipped with the system.

Aff Wheel Drive only Engaged IndicatorSome older vehicles use this red FWD light to indicate a problem with an All Wheel Drive system. FWD stands for Front Wheel Drive, and in this context means that the AWD has been disengaged automatically due to the problem. Only the front wheels will be available until the AWD system is repaired.

How to Open a Volkswagen or Audi with a Dead Key Fob

Retrieving the mechanical key

VW / Audi Key FobThere are three general styles of key fobs in use with Volkswagen and Audi models. With the older style shown to the right, press the chrome button on the back of the key fob (remote control or ‘clicker’) to release the spring-loaded mechanical key, which remains attached to the key fob.

Audi, VW Advanced KeyNewer Volkswagen and Audi models use what they called an Advanced Key, shown to the left. The mechanical key is separated Audi Key Fob 2from the fob (or remote control or ‘clicker’) by pressing the button on the back side of the fob, shown with the arrow, while pulling on the same key ring end.

Audi introduced a third Advanced Key fob style in 2016 that for some reason requires pushing two buttons at the same time. They are on either side of the key ring end, as shown. Push them both while pulling the key ring out to retrieve the mechanical key.

Audi fob newAnd yet a fourth key fob from Audi has a chrome button on the back, similar to the unit above, but below the chrome end. push the button and pull on the key ring end to remove the mechanical key. We saw it first in the new 2019 Q8.

Getting Inside

On some models, the lock cylinder (keyhole) at the back of the door handle will be visible. If so, simply use the key blade to unlock the door.VW /Audi Keyhole Cover

If the keyhole at the back of the driver’s door handle is hidden, press the key blade about a half inch straight up in the hole on the underside of the keyhole cover (a). If you are in the dark, you may need to feel for the hole. This action will loosen the cover and pulling on the door handle will allow you to remove it. Yes, you must remove a piece of the car. Use the mechanical key in the now-exposed lock to unlock the driver’s door.

Retrieving the Karma’s mechanical key

Fisker introduced the range-extended electric Karma in 2011. The company went broke but has since returned with the all electric Ocean. They’re on the fiscal ropes again.

There aren’t too many on the road, but if you have one and need to get in and get started when its key fob dies, this is the place to be.

Fisker Karma fobFor the Karma model, press the button on the reverse of the key fob (remote control or ‘clicker’) and slide the emergency key blade or mechanical key free (right image).

Insert the key into the lock located beneath the passenger side door handle. This will set off the vehicle’s alarm. We do not know if this will unlock the driver’s door as well, Karma unlockwhich could make getting to the next step very difficult while an alarm is blaring.

See the emergency start procedure on the next page. The alarm will will be turned off when the vehicle is started.

Getting into the Fisker Ocean

The Ocean’s key fob does not have a mechanical key, but there is still a back up opening procedure.

Ocean door handlePlace the Fisker logo on the back of the fob against the light colored strip in the center of the driver’s door handle roughly where the arrow is pointing (right). It may need to be moved a half inch one way or the other. The handle will detect the key fob and will extend to the open position.
