Glow plug indicatorWhile updating our Kia dashboard symbols page, we came across something strange, or so it seemed initially. The EV 6 model uses a diesel engine glow plug indicator! Well this made absolutely no sense!
However, digging deeper it turns out that the light is actually used to indicate that the electric vehicle’s (EV’s) high voltage battery is being conditioned.
Diesel engines require heat in the cylinders to operate, which is supplied initially by glow plugs when the engine is cold, conditioning the cylinders. This indicator will be illuminated when the ignition is turned on until the plugs are heated sufficiently to start the engine. The engine simply won’t start until then.
Battery conditioning is essentially the same process, hence the recycled indicator. Conditioning warms a cold battery to allow it to accept a charge more quickly.
And kudos to Kia for finding an appropriate indicator for the process and not simply adding to the already bloated pile. The image looks like a coil or loops in a yellow/amber/orange color.

Lane Following
The Emergency Steering Warning Light (right), and is part of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) The system is intended to assist steering to aid in avoiding a collision with an oncoming vehicle from the front or the side or if a pedestrian or other obstacle is detected.
Another recent addition to the page is the Rear Collision Warning indicator (right). While it resembles many of the symbols already seen on this post, it is specifically used to warn of a possible collision from behind. The difference is that the car in front is seen in full and the one behind is only partially visible. The roles are reversed in collision warnings with a car in front.
The number 29 is ultimately the result of manufacturers designing their own images, at times to depict the type of vehicle, SUV, truck, or sedan, or simply choosing different methods to depict when something is turned off. The three to the right all indicate that the system is off!
Nissan dashboard symbols update
The pop up hood system is a pedestrian safety system akin to the interior air bags. The symbol warns that the system is not available, either due to a malfunction or because it has already been used. The light appears as the front of a vehicle with the hood separated or broken from the windshield.
Jeep dashboard symbols update
brand new warning light, a Traction Battery Coolant Fluid Level Low indicator. The image looks like an extra long battery, complete with plus and minus signs, with a wavy line at the bottom.
Our Genesis dashboard symbols update adds 11 indicators, but none new
In the vast majority of cases, a symbols update involves literally making a half dozen brand new indicators. However, our Genesis dashboard symbols update was a simple matter of adding 11 pre-existing indicators to the table.
This is primarily because the new technology introduced in Genesis this year has also been added to the Hyundai line — and we made those images a few weeks ago!
The major addition is Lane Following Assistance (LFA) which helps detect lane markings and/or a vehicle ahead on the road, and helps center the vehicle in the lane. It is essentially a light duty self driving system that is a step above lane keeping and behind hands free driving. In fact, the driver gets a hands-off warning and if he or she still does not have their hands on the steering wheel lane following assist is automatically canceled.
The owners manual goes on for several pages describing how to set up and use the system. As with Hyundai, we wonder if anyone will bother…
