Engine Start

Engine Start System FaultThese are Engine Start System Fault Indicator symbols. They can appear in yellow/amber or red and indicate a fault in the electronics. If it is red, it is suggested that the engine NOT be switched off, if its running, and a service center be contacted and headed for immediately. If it is amber, a service facility should still be contacted as soon as possible.

Engine Start Symbol Fault 2Engine start systemThe symbols appear as a physical key with or without its associated keyhole, even though an actual physical key is not used. We included it with routine indicators because, as electronics takes over everything, these symbols will indeed become routine due to any problems with starters, start/stop systems and other associated electronics.

Sport Differential or Dynamic Drive Warning Indicators

Sport Differential

Sport Differential WarningDynamic Drive Control FailureThese are versions of a Sport Differential or Dynamic Drive Control Warning Indicator symbol. On vehicles equipped with the sport differential, the warning light, when illuminated, indicates that the differential is either overheated or has malfunctioned. There is no distinction or additional information available to the driver.

If the vehicle has been driven hard for a time however, taking it slow for a time may resolve the warning light. In addition, it is likely an electronic system, and a restart of the vehicle may resolve the issue as well. If not, it will need servicing by a qualified service shop.

The images are variations of similar warning images found in all-wheel drive vehicles. The first is a stick figure with what are wheels turned to one side at one end. There is a single circle between two of the wheels rather than one each between the two sets of wheels, indicating a two wheel drive vehicle. Further, the drive wheels are at the rear.

The second symbol has an X inside what is intended to be a single axle and two wheels It is part of what Alfa Romeo calls its Alfa DNA system: Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced efficiency.

EV (Electric Vehicle) System Warning and Hybrid Service Warning Indicators

EV System

EV System IndicatorEV system fault indicatorEV system indicatorEV system indicatorEV system failure indicatorThese are all EV (Electric Vehicle) or Power System Warning Indicator symbols. The first images are of a rather generic automobile with an exclamation point embedded inside. In yellow/amber it warns of an imminent threat from one of many EV systems. In red, it warns of a fault that must serviced immediately. Note that manufacturers tend to re-style the symbol to match the shape of their vehicles.

Other Versions

HEV fault indicatorEV fault indicatorFCEV fault indicatorMaster warning 3For some EVs, these are the equivalent of the Check Engine Light. They indicate a possible problem in one or more of the following; the traction motor and inverter system, the charge port or charger, the lithium ion battery, the cooling system, or the shift control system. Pretty much any system that allows the vehicle to move might be at issue and a diagnosis by a qualified service shop will be required. HEV indicates a Hydrogen fuel cell and the FC indicates essentially the same.

The symbols above use an exclamation point and the letters HEV or EV for Hybrid Electric or Electric Vehicle in a triangle. Contact your dealer or authorized repair center before attempting to drive further.

Hybrid Service IndicatorThis next image is listed as a Service Indicator. However, since there are no filters to change or other routine maintenance required, this is likely an indication of a system problem, which must be addressed by a qualified service center. The image, in red, is that of a wrench or spanner split by a lightning bolt, although the bolt may be mistaken for a Z.

Electronic Power ControlNote that the very similar looking image to the right is an Electronic Power Control or Engine Speed Limitation indicator. It is seen in internal combustion engine vehicles. So if you’re not in an EV click here for more.

Power Limitation Indicators

Power Limitation

Power Limitation IndicatorTorque limited indicatorPower limited indicatorThese are Power or Torque Limitation Indicator symbols and are used exclusively in electric and hybrid vehicles. The images, which may be seen in yellow/amber or red, have several possible meanings, depending on the manufacturer. The use of the image of a turtle alone or embedded in a circle or the battery with an exclamation point tells the driver what he or she may already know: that the vehicle is less responsive than expected – its power has been reduced. However, its speed may not be affected at all, only its ability to accelerate. There are two additional symbols below.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

European manufacturers use an yellow/amber image when the electric power is in reserve range. Power to the traction motor, and thus the drive wheels, is restricted when the vehicle sees the range drop to four miles or less.

In the Far East, this symbol is used also in yellow/amber to indicate that power has been reduced due to a fault. It can be driven but will need the attention of your dealer or authorized service center for repair as soon as possible.

Illuminated in red in a Hybrid, the symbol generally means that the vehicle is out of gas and only running on the high voltage battery. All a driver needs to do is to find a gas station and fill up, quickly. The hybrid’s high voltage battery will not go far in most cases.

More Versions

Reduced power indicatorReduced power indicator hotOne manufacturer uses these two images to indicate reduced power due to weather or temperature conditions. The first, in blue, notes that power is reduced because of cold drive train conditions. The light may go out as the drive train warms up even if the outside temperature does not rise. The icon will be seen in gray scale when the drive system temperature is high, possibly due to sustained or high power demand when driving on mountain roads, for example.

Many More Versions

Key Not Detected IndicatorThe flashing red Electronic Key symbol on the left indicates that the key is not detected. If the Key is in the vehicle, its internal battery is likely dead and needs to be replaced. The same Electronic Key symbol shown in green indicates that the key is found and the vehicle can be started. The last one in yellow/amber is yet another style indicating a problem. But, there’s more…

Key not found indicatorThis one, which is an image of a key with a line drawn through it in yellow/amber, indicates that the key fob is not present or is malfunctioning. So, if the key fob is present, have your dealer or a locksmith repair or replace it.

Keyless malfunctionNote that some manufacturers will have the light flash in green to indicate a weak fob battery. Thus, any time an electronic key indicator is seen to flash, consult your manual or your dealer for clarification. And the image in actuality is shown by its vehicle manufacturer when the system is in use. Nothing more.

Key Fob in Vehicle IndicatorKey Fob Battery Low IndicatorThese are Key Fob Indicator symbols and are meant to resemble the driver’s hand-held remote control, or fob. The one on the left indicates that the fob is not detected or has been removed from the vehicle. If the fob is in the vehicle, it is not detected and its battery is likely dead. The symbol to its right with the added lighting bolt indicates that the fob is detected but that the battery in the fob is low and should be replaced.

Low Fob BatteryLow Key BatteryKey battery indicatorThese symbols are Low Key Battery Indicators. The images of a key are shown above or alongside the image of what most resembles a AA or AAA battery with its level low. One adds the letter E for empty to the right. Replace the battery as soon as possible. They do NOT use AA or AAA batteries!

Fob Not DetectedIntelligent Key WarningElectronic keys, key fobs, remote controls, smart keys, intelligent keys, advanced keys are all terms used by manufacturers and drivers to describe the same device. You get to get into and start your vehicle only if the correct device is present, has a working battery and is not interfered with by other electronics (actually rare). All the images include the representation of a key and depending on the manufacturer, may include an exclamation point, a question mark or even a lightning bolt.

A charge level indicator may also be shown on the instrument panel. The red and yellow/amber versions are intended to ensure that no attempt is made to drive the vehicle away while it is still plugged in.

Charge ongoing indicatorThis pair of symbols is from Lincoln. The first in green indicates that charging is ongoing. The second in yellow/amber/orange indicates that charging has failed. The exclamation point is there for added emphasis. If the second indicator flashes for 30 seconds, it indicates that the problem with the charge is exterior to the vehicle.

Save indicatorFinally, some hybrid vehicles include a SAVE mode indicator. When in Save mode, the vehicle drives in a way that maintains the charge level of the high voltage battery. The indicator will likely be shown in black and white in the information display.
