Subaru back up entry and start review finds no changes

Subaru LogoSubaru back up

A full review of 2025 models results in no changes to the Subaru back up entry and start page. All Subaru models use the tried and true “push the start/stop button with the back of the key fob to start the vehicles. In fact all the company’s models have used this simple and sane method since they first began using the keyless start option.

Further, the company has never succumbed to the temptation to hide the key hole at the back of the driver’s door handle. While methods for getting at the device has improved tremendously over time, nearly every manufacturer now hides the key hole.

This is fine until the battery in the key fob weakens, and it will at some point. At this point the vehicle needs a back-up option to get and start the vehicle. Hopefully Subaru owners will notice the warning of a weakened battery that will appear on the instrument panel. However, everyone’s busy lives often result in replacing the battery in the fob until “tomorrow” or, because we are all inundated with information from everywhere, the notice may simply be missed.

This is where back-up methods are necessary. And welcome!

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys – or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them – that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares – even though the car had tried to warn you.

Our goal is to help you feel safe – and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible – rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages – without roadside assistance.

Infiniti back up entry update adds but one new entry

Infiniti LogoInfiniti back up entry update

A full review of 2025 Infiniti models results in a single addition. The 2025 GX80 now features a new flush door handle.

Much like others who have opted to add the same feature, the handles are intended to extend when the key fob approaches the vehicle. If the battery in the fob is weak or dead, this will not occur.

QX 80 handleGetting to the key hole is a process also similar to other models with flush door handles. Press the front of the door handle inward. This rotates the rear of the handle outward (right). The handle can then be pulled open.

Pulling the handle out as far as it will go exposes the key hole beneath the back of the handle (right, lower). You can now use the mechanical key to unlock the car.

Hyundai, Kia, Genesis back up entry page overhaul is complete

Kia LogoBack up entry page overhaul

We just completed the last step of a Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis back up entry page overhaul. The intent is to fully separate the three manufacturers who now have way too many back up entry processes.

As a first step, we separated Genesis, admittedly the simplest of the three. Overall, the page used to have only a handful of entry processes, made necessary when the battery in the key fob dies. But Hyundai in particular seems to add a new one each year!

The final step was to move Kia to its own page, leaving parent company Hyundai to populate the original. Its done, and we believe that the result is a cleaner and simpler user experience across all three vehicle lines.

And given that we have 18 videos from all three manufacturers lumped together, it’s likely time to separate them as well…

Hyundai Motor Grp repeats irksome mechanical key problem in new Genesis models

Genesis logoMechanical key problem

We just completed an update of Genesis back up entry processes, made necessary when the battery in the key fob dies, and we are discouraged to say that the parent company has repeated the mechanical key problem we feel now exists in the Hyundai line. When we get to Kia models later this week, we’ll likely find the same thing!

Genesis mechanical keyGenesis has added digital lock and unlock options which is evidently being used as an excuse to keep a mechanical key separate from the key fob. It is kept in its own little case (right).

As we noted in our Hyundai update, we really dislike this development. The mechanical keys can easily be lost or simply left behind, and digital options on the smart phone have proven to be less than 100% effective and requires the start battery to be charged. A mechanical key is always 100% effective!

G90 key hole coverThere is also a cover hiding the key hole in the G90 that is revealed when the handle is pulled out. This is likely protection from the elements. Its a simple swing out piece that moves towards the rear of the car (right). The key hole is revealed and the key can be used to unlock the car.

Polestar back up entry and start update points to manufacturer schizophrenia

Polestar-logoPolestar back up entry and start update

Our latest Polestar back up entry and start update really points to a manufacturer trying to figure it out. The schizophrenia leads to each new model having a different back up entry process and, while both the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 use essentially the same back up start process, one model holds an interesting surprise.

Polestar 4 back up entryPolestar-3 door handleA mechanical key is not available to unlock the Polestar 3 or Polestar 4. The smart phone app or the vehicle’s key card will be needed. With the Polestar 3, the card is touched to the front of the driver’s door handle (right). With the Polestar 4, the card is touched to the middle of the door pillar just behind the driver’s door (far right).

Polestar 3 card readerBoth models use a card reader at the front of the center console to start the car when the key fob’s battery has died. The reader doubles as a phone charger as well as a key fob charger for the Polestar 3!

Only BMW has tried this and it never left the one vehicle it was assigned to.

You can see the Polestar back up open processes here and the back up start processes here.

Mercedes_logoA 4th Door Handle

In 2023, Mercedes-Benz added a 4th door handle that hides the key hole to its model line up. Thus far they are seen only on the CLE Cabriolet and 2024 GLC models.

Effectively, it continues a trend is to move away from the need to remove a piece of GLC key holethe door handle to use the mechanical key if the battery in the key fob dies.

Pulling the driver’s door handle to the open position reveal the key hole underneath the back of the handle (right). Its a simple process to then insert the key and turn to get inside. This will 2021 Mercedes door handlelikely set off the alarm. It will shut off when the car is started.

This compliments the flush door handles first seen in 2021 Maybach models. This has now been added to AMG and EQS models in 2023, EQE, E-Class, S-Class and C-Class models in 2024. The key hole is revealed in the center of the space when the door handle is pulled open (right).
