Hyundai Motor Grp repeats irksome mechanical key problem in new Genesis models

Genesis LogoMechanical key problem

We just completed an update of Genesis back up entry processes, made necessary when the battery in the key fob dies, and we are discouraged to say that the parent company has repeated the mechanical key problem we feel now exists in the Hyundai line. When we get to Kia models later this week, we’ll likely find the same thing!

Genesis mechanical keyGenesis has added digital lock and unlock options which is evidently being used as an excuse to keep a mechanical key separate from the key fob. It is kept in its own little case (right).

As we noted in our Hyundai update, we really dislike this development. The mechanical keys can easily be lost or simply left behind, and digital options on the smart phone have proven to be less than 100% effective and requires the start battery to be charged. A mechanical key is always 100% effective!

G90 key hole coverThere is also a cover hiding the key hole in the G90 that is revealed when the handle is pulled out. This is likely protection from the elements. Its a simple swing out piece that moves towards the rear of the car (right). The key hole is revealed and the key can be used to unlock the car.

You can see the back entry page here.

In addition, proper safety procedures and precautions, such as the  use of safety goggles, the right tools and the equipment should be followed at all times to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety.

Polestar back up entry and start update points to manufacturer schizophrenia

Polestar-logoPolestar back up entry and start update

Our latest Polestar back up entry and start update really points to a manufacturer trying to figure it out. The schizophrenia leads to each new model having a different back up entry process and, while both the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 use essentially the same back up start process, one model holds an interesting surprise.

Polestar 4 back up entryPolestar-3 door handleA mechanical key is not available to unlock the Polestar 3 or Polestar 4. The smart phone app or the vehicle’s key card will be needed. With the Polestar 3, the card is touched to the front of the driver’s door handle (right). With the Polestar 4, the card is touched to the middle of the door pillar just behind the driver’s door (far right).

Polestar 3 card readerBoth models use a card reader at the front of the center console to start the car when the key fob’s battery has died. The reader doubles as a phone charger as well as a key fob charger for the Polestar 3!

Only BMW has tried this and it never left the one vehicle it was assigned to.

You can see the Polestar back up open processes here and the back up start processes here.

Mercedes-Benz adds a 4th door handle style

Mercedes_logoA 4th Door Handle

In 2023, Mercedes-Benz added a 4th door handle that hides the key hole to its model line up. Thus far they are seen only on the CLE Cabriolet and 2024 GLC models.

Effectively, it continues a trend is to move away from the need to remove a piece of GLC key holethe door handle to use the mechanical key if the battery in the key fob dies.

Pulling the driver’s door handle to the open position reveal the key hole underneath the back of the handle (right). Its a simple process to then insert the key and turn to get inside. This will 2021 Mercedes door handlelikely set off the alarm. It will shut off when the car is started.

This compliments the flush door handles first seen in 2021 Maybach models. This has now been added to AMG and EQS models in 2023, EQE, E-Class, S-Class and C-Class models in 2024. The key hole is revealed in the center of the space when the door handle is pulled open (right).

We’ve updated the back up entry page here.

Open a Tesla with a Dead Key Fob or Mobile Phone

How to Open a Tesla with a Dead Key Fob or Mobile Phone

Getting into Your Tesla

Model S

There are now three back up entry versions for the Model S depending on when it was built. The first two belong to vehicles that did not come with a key card. If your model did not come with a try card, try both methods below, as it is unclear where the exact build separation is.

In each case, the key fob is held to a spot on the body of the car until the key fob is recognized. Tesla uses an all electronic system, so there is no hard key and corresponding key cylinder available.

First Models

Model S open earlyIn the earliest versions of the Model S, the back of key fob is to be placed against the passenger side front fender, somewhat below and to the right of the emblem, as shown in the image. When the fob is recognized, the door handles will extend as they do normally.

The instructions in newer models note that if the car does not respond, first try repositioning the fob. Failing that, try removing the dead battery from the fob and go through the process again. This last bit really shouldn’t be necessary.

Note that it will take several seconds for the car to recognize the fob.

Newer Models

Tesla Wiper SpotThe concept is the same in the newer Model S, but the location is changed. However, it remains on the passenger side. Place the key fob near the base of the passenger side windshield wiper. The image to the right shows the exact spot that worked in the model we tested, and we tried several. Then press the driver’s door handle. The handles will extend if it is recognized, but it took a full 20 seconds in the car we tested. Try repositioning the fob if this fails. If it continues not to be recognized, try removing the battery and go back through the process.

Be patient – it took a full 20 seconds for the car to recognize the fob in the model we tested!

Models With a Key Card

If you have a key card, place it on the door frame between the front and rear doors on the driver’s side and just above the bottom of the windows, as shown in the Model 3 and Y image below. The door handles will extend inviting you inside. Thankfully, recognition is near instantaneous. The vehicle can be locked this way as well.

Model X

Model X openTesla’s Model X uses an entirely different back up location. There again is no hard key or key cylinder. In addition, the door handles do not extend in normal operation as with the Model S. The mirrors will extend when the key fob is recognized.

Place the key fob at the base of the car on the driver’s side below the front of the rear door, as shown. If the car fails to respond, try changing the fob’s position. Finally, if the car continues not to respond, remove the battery from the fob and start over.

Once again, be patient. It may take several seconds in each position.

Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla jumped the shark with the Model 3, doing away with the key fob altogether and relying on a mobile app to get their owner’s in and started. And it works. Of course, a mobile phone’s battery can be drained in a day or less, it can fail, or the phone itself can go missing. So, the back up is a key card, the size of a credit card. No pun intended, but don’t leave home without it. The process is the same for the newer Model Y.

Model 3 openTo get in, the key card is placed on the door frame between the front and rear doors on the driver’s side and just above the bottom of the windows, as shown. As with other models, the mirrors will extend inviting you inside. The vehicles can be locked this way as well.

There are videos to help here.
