These are the Recuperative or Regenerative Brake System (RBS) Indicatorsymbols. If this symbol is illuminated on your instrument panel, the RBS is malfunctioning. This type of system is found in Hybrid and electric vehicles and uses the function of slowing down to generate electricity for the main high voltage battery.
Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
Otherwise, you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!
The two additional version to the left are Regenerative Braking Icon Indicatorsymbols. they appear as a household battery with arrows circling it or circling inside it. The word ‘Regen’ appears below in one. A horizontal charge bar may appear as well. The symbol remains in gray scale until it is active, when the battery and arrows appear green.
These icons will also appear in gray scale when regenerative power is limited because the high voltage battery is near full charge or is cold.
These also appear as household batteries, but as Max Regeneration indicators, they are meant to indicate that maximum regeneration capability has been engaged and operating. They will be accompanied by the following instrument cluster messages: Max Regeneration On when the feature is turned on, Max Regeneration Off when the feature is turned off, and Max Regeneration Unavailable when the feature is requested, disabled.
The indicator light will flash for five seconds. It appears in green on the instrument panel and in white in the message center.
These indicators come from another manufacturer, Kia, which uses arrows and the colors blue and white. The number of arrows, 1, 2 or 3, indicates how much regeneration has been set: 1 is lowest, and we’ve chosen to show 3. In white, regeneration is not taking place. In blue, regeneration is occurring. The arrows appear in what looks like a battery box.
This is a Regeneration Boost Indicatorsymbol. It is seen when the driver chooses to increase the regeneration braking force. The result is that the vehicle will slow more quickly when the accelerator pedal is released. It appears as a foot on a pedal with an up and down arrow.
Similarly, Honda Motors Corp. offers the option the increase or decrease the rate of regeneration using a paddle on the steering wheel stalk. The result is the symbol to the left, a Deceleration Paddle Selector Indicator. Using the deceleration paddle selector, the driver can you sequentially shift through six stages of deceleration. The more larger V shapes are seen, the more deceleration is chosen. The M indicates that the choice has been locked in, suggesting the letter should be an L!
In the vast majority of electric and hybrid vehicles, the actual brake system is not involved. However, recuperative braking slows the vehicle and a malfunction of the system will require more use the vehicle’s brakes to come to a stop.
In vehicles where the brake system is involved, braking performance may be affected and pedal travel may be lengthened. Any loss of brake performance presents an accident risk. Have your dealer or qualified repair shop address this as soon as possible.

These are Pedestrian or Animal Detection Warning Indicatorsymbols. There are two types or styles because the first manufacturer to use the system has developed a changeable instrument display.
Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
If a standard or typical instrument cluster is chosen, the symbol to the left will be shown if a collision with a person detected is imminent. The symbol looks like a human male with energy beams radiating from his hands! It is meant to look like a man standing in the driving lane.
If a different display type is chosen, and a collision with a person detected is imminent, the symbol to the left will be shown inside the display. It looks like a more generic human with sound waves coming out of him or her. It is meant to indicate radar beams bouncing off the person.
These systems are generally capable of detecting animals as well, and some manufacturers add the image to the left to separate animal from pedestrian detection. As a driver, your reaction will likely be very, very similar.
Ideally, since the detection system exists the brakes will be applied automatically. Regardless, please apply the brakes yourself and avoid running them over! Of course if you’re reading this after the fact, its a bit late!

These are Forward Alert Indicatorsymbols. It shows an image of a car alone or inside a triangle. The use of the triangle is for reasons known only to the manufacturer. The technology makes use the Advanced Cruise Control (ACC) radar, even when the ACC is not in use, to warn if you are on a collision path with another vehicle or even the back of your garage!
Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
It Illuminates green when activated and will move through yellow/amber and redand an audible warning will be heard if an obstacle is approached. It will remain green and not offer an audible warning if the driver is already braking. The sensitivity of the alert, or the distance to a detected obstacle, can be increased or decreased. The symbols are variously shown as cars alone from behind, inside a triangle or with lines beneath it inside a circle inside brackets.
A similar function is found in the Advanced Vehicle Safety Management (AVSM) system. This indicator clearly says that the system is turned OFF, which is a driver’s option. If OFF has not been chosen, a malfunction is indicated. All other systems will function normally and the vehicle is safe to drive.
When in operation, the system will alert the driver to a vehicle ahead in his or her lane that is traveling at a slower speed with a vehicle image and the word CAUTION in the instrument panel information screen. The system will apply the brakes only gently and only when the driver’s foot is removed from the gas pedal.

These are Speed Limiter and Automatic or Active or Adaptive Speed Limiter (ASL) Indicator symbols. They illuminate when a speed has been set and the limiter is active. It will appear in green unless or until the set speed is reached when it turns yellow/amber.
Before continuing, are you sure one of these is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
The two versions seen to the left start in white inside the message center when the system is on and available. It turns to green, like the third image, or yellow/amber, depending on the manufacturer, when a speed is set. The set speed will be shown separately in the message center and will flash if the speed is exceeded.
In the first example, the set speed is displayed in the image, which is a half or three quarter circle with the letter LIM shown below. The partial circle is likely meant to be a dial. The second image image is that of a broken dial like a speedometer with a marked range indicated by a double-ended arrow. It also gives the appearance of a clock. The acronym ASL is added. The third image is much like the first.
This version replicates an actual speed limit sign that would be seen on any highway coast-to-coast in North America. It would be displayed in the information center along with a depiction of the car travelling on the highway. It is known as Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), which is uses information from the detected road signs and uses the navigation system data to inform of the speed limit and to help maintain the proper speed automatically.
Alternatively, a speed may be chosen and set which will appear in blue, which indicates the system is active. It is associated with Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.
The image styles are a manufacturer choice, and the one with the speed shown is only marginally more informative than the other.
A step ahead is a system from Fisker Inc. that adds the detection of a road’s speed limit and adjusts the vehicle’s speed accordingly. As part of the company’s Advanced Diver Assistance System (ADAS), Fisker Intelligent Pilot, or Fi-Pilot, uses the symbols to the left to indicate that the system is available, in gray scale or on, in blue.
Other Symbols
These images include the exclamation point and indicates a malfunction in the Speed Limiter system. The numerals found in the first image above are replaced by a broken line. The system will be unavailable until it is serviced by a qualified shop. Note that the system is a part of the cruise control system, and it too may be unavailable.
The system uses the cruise control speed adjustment to set a speed limit. The set limit will likely be displayed in a message screen. When set, the engine will respond normally up to the set speed. The vehicle will not accelerate beyond the set speed unless sudden, rapid acceleration is needed and applied forcing the transmission to kick down to a lower gear. Speed limitation is then suspended.

These are Electric Power Steering (or Electronic or Electronically controlled) (EPS) Indicatorsymbols. If equipped, the light will come on when the vehicle is first started. If it comes on while driving, it indicates a problem with the system.
Before moving on, are you sure one of these is your symbol?? If yes, then continue on below.

The good news is that there may be a way around it…
As an electronic system, there is a chance it can be “reset”. Pull over as soon as possible and shut down the engine for a short period of time (on the order of 10-20 seconds) and restart the vehicle. If the light does not go out you will need to take the vehicle to your dealer or authorized repair facility as soon as possible.
Also, the vehicle can be driven with a power steering failure. However, the steering will lack the power assist and will be far more difficult to steer. So if you choose to proceed, please do so with caution.

This text symbol, IMA, stands for Integrated Motor Assist. It is associated with hybrid vehicles. The indicator normally comes on for a few seconds when the ignition is first switched on. There is nothing serviceable by the vehicle’s owner, so if the indicator comes on at any other time, you will need to see your dealer or qualified service center as soon as possible. The vehicle will not operate on the gas engine or the hybrid battery alone and IMA connects the two.
