Launch control indicatorThis is a Launch Control Indicator symbol. It is seen when Launch Control (LC) is enabled. The indicator is seen only as the LC acronym. Launch Control is a feature that can only be used in a straight line and is specific to vehicles that can be taken from the street and raced on a drag strip.

The feature can only be enabled when the vehicle is fully stopped.  LC helps stabilize the vehicle as it accelerates.

Heads Up Display Dashboard Indicator

Heads up display indicatorThis is a Heads Up Display Indicator symbol. Looking more like a caterpillar than anything automotive, it will be seen when the vehicle is started indicating that the Heads Up Display is working, and when using adaptive cruise control or the collision warning system.  It can appear in any color depending on the system availability.

When in use, the Heads Up Display uses lasers to paint an image on the windshield. It can contain information ranging from the vehicles speed to the distance to a vehicle ahead or even a navigation map.

Front Lift System Dashboard Indicator

Front Lift

Front lift indicatorThis is a Front Lift System Indicator symbol. If equipped, this light will flash to indicate when the front of the vehicle is being raised or lowered. An up or down arrow in the indicator will also be displayed, depending on the direction of movement. Note that the light will then remain on while the front is fully raised.

The system, powered by a two-position lift actuator, can hydraulically raise the front of vehicles that ride low to provide approximately 50 mm (2 in) of increased clearance. The Front Lift System allows the driver to lift the front of the vehicle to enter a driveway, clear curbs or speed bumps and to drive onto ramps or trailers.

Further, the front height can be raised automatically using the vehicle’s GPS navigation system. The vehicle can be programmed with up to 1,000 locations. Once the activation button is pushed, a notification appears on the Driver Information Center (DIC) and ask the driver if the location should be remembered.

The symbol appears as the drawing of the front of a car approaching a raised obstacle with an arrow shown pointing up or down.

Engine Stop Dashboard Indicators

Stop engine indicatorEngine stop indicatorThese are Engine Stop Indicator symbols. They indicate a serious engine issue that requires the engine be shut down. This could be an overheat problem, a lack of oil pressure, a loss of electrical power, or any number of serious emission control issues.

The word STOP alone would be seen in red. The same word seen inside the engine symbol is seen in yellow/amber. Likely as not an additional warning light will be seen. Likely candidates are an oil warning, temperature warning or charge warning. Click the links for more. In any case, servicing will be needed from a qualified service shop.

Rear Window Defrost Indicator

Rear Window Defrost

Rear window defrost indicatorThis is a Rear Window Defrost Indicator symbol. Seen in yellow/amber, it appears when the rear window defroster is active as a reminder. In most cases, the defroster will turn itself off after a pre-set period of time.

It is seen in a warning color (yellow/amber) in case the defroster remains on too long, which can harm the system. The symbol will match the symbol found on the defroster switch.

Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) Indicators

RAB fault indicatorRAB off indicatorBCI OFF indicatorThese are Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) System Indicator and Backup Collision Intervention System (BCI) symbols. These simple text symbols indicate the system condition. Each holds the system acronym. The first indicates a fault in the system that will require a qualified service shop. The other two indicate that the system has been switched off.

RAB indicatorPark Assist SymbolPark assist offThe picture symbols here are used by some manufacturers and is seen if the system is unavailable. The sensors may be dirty, but if the light remains after cleaning, a qualified service shop will be needed.

Note that the second image with the P with lines radiating towards what looks like a sail was originally developed as a Park Assist system symbol, which can be seen here. The connection is relatively obvious with the need to be in reverse when parking in many instances. Adding the word OFF means the system is turned off.

Reverse brake assist indicatorThe symbol to the left is from a system with a slightly different name, Reverse Brake Assist. The symbol is shown when the brakes have been applied by the system. Its is shown as a car with an explosion to the right and below. Difficult to see is a down facing arrow in the explosion.

RAB is designed to help avoid collisions or reduce collision damage when the vehicle is in reverse. When functioning properly, if an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle while reversing, the system will sound a warning and may activate the vehicle’s brakes automatically. The system detects objects using sonar sensors installed in the rear bumper.

One manufacturer using the system (Subaru) goes so far as to note that if need be, the system can be overcome by pressing the accelerator to cancel the system function. The example used was being trapped on a railroad crossing with a crossing gate behind the vehicle.

Sway Bar Disconnected Indicator Symbols

Sway BarThis is a Sway Bar Disconnected Indicator symbol. It indicates that the sway bar has been disconnected electronically. If this was not intended, the disconnect switch may have been activated inadvertently.

Sway bar faultA vehicle may have the capability to have the sway bar disconnect electronically. This allows greater front suspension travel in for off-road applications and should only be used (disconnected) in these applications. The process is controlled by the Sway Bar switch on the dashboard. A fault in the control of this feature will result in the same symbol, with the added exclamation point.

A sway bar is vital to the control of any vehicle in normal driving conditions. If it does not re-engage, the sway bar indicator will flash continuously. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle above 15 miles per hour and have the system serviced as soon as possible.
