Power Top Trouble Indicators

Power Top

Convertible Top IndicatorThese are Convertible or Power Top Trouble Indicator symbols. The second, which just appears as lines and angles one floating above another, is used for a power hardtop from one manufacturer. The first image features just enough “split” or space at the point of the windshield and between the roof and the trunk to suggest that the roof can be folded away. Of course, the owner of a such a vehicle already knows the car is a convertible – we presume. The symbol adds the double directional arrows to indicate that what goes up can come down.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The symbols are meant to indicate trouble with the power top system, before the top is opened or closed. It comes on during a systems check when the vehicle is started and will stay on if a fault is detected. It will also come on during operation of the top and stay on if the process is not fully completed.

Unfortunately, if a convertible top gets stuck mid-stream going up or down, the trouble symbol will often seem pointless. And if there is a fault in the system, the switch will not activate the top!

More Versions

Convertible top lock indicatorThis next set is a little more helpful.  The first is a Top Lock Indicator symbol. The symbol, shown in red, is the image of a car with the top down and a padlock above it.  It indicates that the lock mechanism is not engaged or has failed.

Convertible failure indicatorThis next one, also seen in red, is Top Failure Indicator. It has the same image of the car with an exclamation point above the back of the car. It essentially says that the car does not recognize where the top is and will need to be secured, opened or closed, manually.

This one may also be seen in yellow/amber. In this case, it is most likely that the control mechanism has overheated. Give it a little time and try again.

Convertible top speed indicatorThis one is Speed Warning Indicator. It simply says that the top cannot be activated because the car is moving too fast. This explains what is supposed be a speedometer above the back of the image of the car. It is seen in yellow/amber.

Top open indicatorTrunk partition open indicatorThese last two will be seen in the information screen in black and white, along with text describing any problem that may exist. The first is a relatively simple image of a convertible top partially open. Any one of a half a dozen possible messages describing an issue will be seen as well.

The second shows a separation at the back of the car and indicates that the trunk partition is not fully closed. An obstruction may be at fault. The trunk partition opens to take in or release the roof during operation.

Second Row or Rear Seat Safety Belt Warning Indicator Symbols

Rear Safety Belts

Rear Seatbelt IndicatorThese are Second Row or Rear Seat Safety Belt Warning Indicator symbols. In the simplest case, if a rear seat passenger is detected, the safety belt symbols come on in yellow/amber and stay on for several seconds to alert the driver that passengers may need to fasten their safety belts.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.

When the vehicle is started, these lights come on solid to remind rear passengers to buckle up. Then each light may stay on solid or flash if the rear passenger remains unbuckled, or becomes unbuckled, when the vehicle is moving. The X indicates the seat belt is not buckled, while the check mark is used to indicate the seat belt is buckled.

EyeSight System Malfunction Indicator Symbols

EyeSight

EyeSight Off Indicator SymbolEyeSight Indicator SymbolThese Warning Indicator Symbols are associated with EyeSight Systems. These are driver assistance safety systems meant to help avoid or minimize collisions with obstacles moving in your direction. In use, the systems combine active or adaptive cruise control, pre-collision or automatic braking, and vehicle lane departure warning systems and depends on the proper function of two cameras mounted inside the vehicle near the top of the windshield that produce a stereo image.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!

The indicator with the line through the words Eye and Sight means the system has been turned off temporarily. This may be due to a dirty or fogged windshield, bad weather conditions (fog or heavy rain for instance), strong light in the direction of travel, or extreme hot or cold. The system will restore itself once the problem is resolved or resolves itself.

In the case of an actual malfunction with the system, the second indicator will flash. This will require your dealer to resolve, although you might try shutting the vehicle off and restarting to reset the system. The vehicle can be operated normally with the warning light on or flashing, but without the benefit of the EyeSight system.

In both cases, the pre-collision and lane departure systems will be turned off, and their respective OFF indicators will be seen as well. Addressing the EyeSight problem will resolve all the warning lights. So, be sure that service personnel begin with the Eyesight system.

These symbols (left/above and below) are all or might be Electric Park(ing) Brake (EPB) Fault Indicators. The circle in brackets remains the basic image used to denote a vehicle’s brakes and in the case to the far left adds the lightning bolt, which denotes electricity. It will flash or remain lit if a fault is detected. Two indicators add the wrench or spanner below or alongside the circle to indicate that service is needed.

Electric Park Brake IndicatorPARK symbol in red

Auto EPB off indicatorElectric park brake malfunction indicatorelectric park brake troubleThe text symbols with the word PARK are actually all Electric Park Brake On Indicators as well as Fault Indicators, if the light is seen when the brake is engaged and the ignition on. The light will remain on for a short time after the ignition is turned off. The final two lights show the Auto (electric) park brake has been turned OFF. Those lights will be turned off when the system is re-engaged.

If however, if any of these lights flash, it may indicate a fault. In most cases, if the light goes off, the system is working properly. If it continues to flash or remains on while in motion, find a qualified service station as soon as possible. The brake may actually be engaged, so check to be sure it is not.

Note that the PARK symbol is also used as a mechanical Park Brake Indicator. It simply means that the park, hand or foot brake has been left on.

The text symbol holding the acronym on the left will alsoElectric Power Brake Warning Indicator indicate a fault in the system if illuminated. If this light is seen along with a Stability Control warning indicator, have the Stability Control System serviced as soon as possible. That system, not the brake, has an issue that needs to be resolved by your dealer or authorized service center.

In any case, the parking brake is also the emergency brake, so don’t wait. Have it repaired!

Engine Oil Level and Sensor Indicators

Engine Oil Level

Check oil level indicatorEngine Oil Level SensorOil pressure sensor malfunctionOil Level Sensor FailureThese are alternative to or in addition to Engine Oil Level Warning Indicator symbols. They are used by a handful of manufacturers. The added text or images point the way. Despite the yellow/amber color, these two symbols should be addressed as soon as possible. The exclamation point added to the oil can is also a Sensor Malfunction Indicator and is shown in red or yellow/amber. In these cases, the oil level cannot be sensed by the vehicle. More below…

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The first, with the wrench or spanner on one side, is a warning to check the oil level. If the vehicle tracks the mileage since the previous oil change, the light is a warning that an oil change is due.

The second, with the word SENSOR in it, says that the vehicle can no longer warn you if the oil level or pressure drops dangerously low. The wavy line is meant to indicate ‘level’ and the drop represents oil. This symbol should frankly be red as either condition can severely damage your engine and make for a very bad day. Have your dealer or authorized service center repair it immediately.

More Versions

Engine Oil level Minimum IndicatorLow oil level indicatorThe same symbol with the added text MIN, says that the engine’s oil level has dropped to its minimum level for safe operation. Alternatively, the symbol shown as a dip stick with a drop of oil falling from it in red also indicates that the oil level is too low. In either case, add some oil as soon as you can or better yet, use this as an opportunity to get an oil and filter change.

Lambda Sensor Warning Indicator Symbol

Lambda Sensor

Lambda Sensor IndicatorThis is the Lambda Sensor Warning Indicator symbol. The symbol says that the exhaust gas oxygen sensor is dirty or inoperative. The vehicle should not be driven for any length of time in this condition as this sensor is key to controlling the oxygen to fuel ratio in your engine. The Greek letter lambda looks like an upside down Y and it is shown in a triangle.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The symbol is an odd mix of green and yellow/amber colors, not to mention a letter from the Greek alphabet, and is seen only in older vehicles. Yellow/amber is a warning color while green is intended to inform and not to warn. The Check Engine Light is used to covers this fault in later models.
