BlueCruise system indicators

BlueCruise system

Bluecruise available indicatorBlue cruise active indicatorBlue cruise hands-free indicatorThese are BlueCruise System Indicator symbols. When active, BlueCruise, a subscription service from Lincoln, uses cameras to monitor the vehicle’s position within a lane and applies steering support to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols pages and scan again!

The indicator color changes to indicate the system status. Gray indicates BlueCruise is on but inactive. Green says the system is active and applying continuous steering support. Blue indicates that the system is active and hands-free driving mode is available.

Using the cameras and location information, BlueCruise allows might allow a driver to remove his or her hands from the steering wheel, creating a hands-free driving mode in certain areas. A larger graphic in the instrument panel transforms into a steering wheel without hands on it to indicate hands-free driving availability mode.

The system uses a driver facing camera and infrared lighting to monitor the driver’s eyes and head position to detect distraction, at which point an alert will be sounded.

There are a number of limitations to the system. For instance it will not operate when the vehicle is not centered in the lane, when a lane is too narrow or too wide, a lane marking is not detected, whien in a construction area or when using a spare tire. There are others as well.

In addition, proper safety procedures and precautions, such as the use of safety goggles, the right tools and the equipment should be followed at all times to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety.

Auto brake hold indicators page now holds 20 entries

Auto brake hold

Thanks to Subaru, the Auto Brake Hold indicators page now has 20 entries. The company, which already uses a different name for the system, had two symbols in use. However, it opted to put the acronym inside the standard brake symbol, which is a circle in brackets, meant to be a brake drum and brake pads, respectively.

AVH indicatorAuto vehicle hold indicatorAuto vehicle hold indicatorAVH is the acronym for Auto Vehicle Hold. Subaru was already using it as a text symbol (far right). It was also using the empty circle and brackets (center right). Both of these were in green, while the latest (right) is in black and white.

The lights describe systems that keeps the brakes applied when the vehicle is stopped and other conditions are met. They indicate that the system is on and functioning properly.

However, in our opinion, adding yet another image for drivers to interpret was completely unnecessary. Any one of the other illustrations could easily have been used or the company could have simply stayed with what it already had. And we’ll keep saying it: the more symbols that are created the more useless the entire indicator light system becomes.

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble – a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

One-touch interior illumination indicator

Interior illumination

Interior illumination indicatorThis is the One-touch interior illumination indicator symbol. It will illuminate when the one-touch interior illumination switch is activated, which switches on all of the vehicle’s overhead map and reading lights. The manual we found this in does not speak to the color of the indicator. We chose the yellow/amber/orange palette because if the switch is left on, there is a real risk of battery drainage.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols pages and scan again!

For the switch, found in some Subaru models, to work, the interior lights must be set to the “DOOR” position in the overhead console. Pressing the switch again turns all these lights off. When turned on using the switch, the lights can also be turned off by locking the doors using the key fob, door handle, or Power Rear Gate Lock Switch.

Mercury symbols page now features the new color coded ordering

Mercury logoMercury symbols page

Our Mercury symbols page has now been aligned by color. We’ve have now transformed several pages, including our primary symbols page, to reflect a color ordering.

As a testament to the growth of technology and the accompanying indicators, the Mercury page holds just over 50 symbols. The majority of manufacturers now have this number to near 100 and more.

Mercury as a manufacturer has been defunct since 2011. Nevertheless, we will keep the page for drivers of the cars who likely have few places to turn for help. We also have pages for Holden, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Scion, all of whom have faded from the scene. We have a Fisker page as well, a car company whose status remains in limbo…

The page’s indicators are now ordered red through white, which generally provides a “mostly serious” to “simply letting you know” range. We used the term “mostly serious” for red indicators because many of them do not point to problem with the vehicle.

Regardless, the new ordering provides a cleaner, simpler option for drivers searching for information.

Boost indicator symbol

Boost indicator

Boost indicatorThis is a Boost Indicator text symbol. It is found in Mazda hybrid vehicles, and the company offers no more explanation than that the “light turns on when the energy used for driving is at maximum output.” It is associated with the vehicle’s Charge Mode  and EV Mode indicators, so we surmise that the vehicle’s high-voltage battery is what is at its highest output.

Collision warning and intervention system indicators now number 29

Collision Warning and Intervention

Our Collision Warning and Intervention page now features 29 entries. We added another today from Mazda, who also uses a different name for the system: Smart Brake Support (SBS). That’s now nine different naming conventions for the same basic system.

Plus, our Collision Warning and Intervention page begins with a an item from In August of 2022, which points out that six leading organizations that are committed to consumer safety and education — AAA, Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, National Safety Council, PAVE, and SAE — came together to develop the standardized naming conventions for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technologies.

So much for that…

Smart brake support offCollision WarningAuto braking off indicatorForward Collision Warning OffThe added symbol brings to four the number of symbols used for the system simply being turned off. Each has the word off in it, one is purely an acronym for the system, three use a car or two cars as well as stars to suggest a crash, while Mazda adds an arrow for the direction of travel (far right).

The addition is completely unnecessary in our opinion. One of the other two illustrations could easily have been used. And we’ll keep saying it: the more symbols that are created the more useless the entire warning light system becomes.

Lane keeping assist page swells to 33 entries

Lane keeping assist

Lane Keeping Assist page now hold 33 entries. This comes courtesy of Mazda, which calls its system Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), growing the number of name options to 10, because of course, why use a single name for the same system!

Emergency lane keeping offLane Departure System OffSeveral manufacturers use the first image to the right to indicate that lane keeping is off. But why use an existing symbol when you can make your own! The new symbol from Mazda is to the far right, and adds an arrow in the direction of travel and a star to suggest a collision. It also removes a lane line.

None of these change are necessary in our opinion, and simply continues to swell the opportunities to confuse drivers.

The more symbols that are created the more useless the entire warning light system becomes.
