Slip Indicator, Stability Control and Fault Symbols

Slip Indicators

Slip Indicator SymbolTraction Control IndicatorStability system indicatorThese are all Slip Indicator and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Fault symbols. When a vehicle detects slippery conditions, its stability or traction control system is activated. The light will flash, irregularly in some vehicles, indicating that the system is doing its work, which is to help keep the vehicle in control (next paragraph).

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

These systems work by applying brake action to individual wheels when a loss of steering control is detected. Braking may be applied to an outer front wheel to counter oversteer, or an inner rear wheel to counter understeer. Its important to note that some systems, depending on the manufacturer, may reduce engine power until control is reestablished.

If the same light remains lit or flashes for an extended period when starting your vehicle, it indicates a fault in the stability control system. The vehicle will operate normally, but without the advanced control system. You may continue driving, but do so with caution, particularly in poor weather.

Many More Versions

Some manufacturers also include an intermittent beep while the system is active. Your dealer or authorized service center will be best equipped to address problems with the system.

Low trac indicatorTrac on indicatorTraction control indicatorElectronic stability programBut again, for the most part, these images appear when the system is functioning properly and doing its job! There are no other warning lights that will appear on your instrument panel when a vehicle’s system is doing what its supposed to do. They are frankly an unnecessary distraction, particularly given that road conditions are likely slippery.

Note that Traction Control evolved to Active Traction Control, finally evolving to Stability Control Systems. Warning lights for these systems are more commonly seen as variations of the image of a car with skid marks behind it, but all of them are doing essentially the same job.

Stability Control Fault IndicatorStabilty Control Fault IndicatorStability control faultThe image with its squiggly or wavy lines behind a car, is unfortunately that of a car in a skid, which can be more than a little unnerving, particularly to drivers unfamiliar with the symbol’s meaning. It is seen whether the system is working to keep the vehicle in control and when the system is off, which the strike through line indicates. The addition of the wrench also indicates that the vehicle has detected a fault in the system. Again, the vehicle will operate normally, but without the advanced control system.

Amber Master Warning Light SymbolThe last image to include is the triangle with an exclamation point inside. Some older vehicles that were first to offer stability control use this as a Slip Indicator or as a Fault Indicator. That is, it is seen when the system is doing its job and keeping the vehicle in control when a slip or skid is sensed, as was noted above.

Unfortunately, the symbol is more commonly seen in red as the Master Warning symbol. It is used to get a driver’s attention so that he or she would take notice of a message in the instrument panel’s information center. Learn more here.

Too Many Names

Due to a lack of standardization, stability control systems go by names chosen by individual vehicle manufacturer. It may be:

  • AdvanceTrac
  • Automatic Stability Control (ASC)
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
  • Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC)
  • Electronic Stability / Stabilization Control (ESC)
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • Interactive Vehicle Dynamics (IVD)
  • Precision Control System (PCS)
  • StabiliTrak
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
  • Vehicle Dynamics Control Systems (VDCS)
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
  • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), etc.

But the lights and the words mean exactly the same thing.

When illuminated, this text indicator, DSTC SPORT, does not indicate a problem. Rather it says that the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system’s Sport Mode has been selected by the driver. The manufacturer states that the actual function is to provide maximum traction in sand, snow or while driving with snow chains, which would seem completely counter to a “Sport Mode”.

DSTC includes a number of functions: Traction Control (TC), Active Yaw Control (AYC), Spin Control (SC), and Trailer Stability Assist (TSA), all of which sound too much like an attempt at winning an acronym competition. The end game is helping you keep your vehicle safely on the road.

Engine Start System Fault Indicator

Engine Start

Engine Start System FaultThese are Engine Start System Fault Indicator symbols. They can appear in yellow/amber or red and indicate a fault in the electronics. If it is red, it is suggested that the engine NOT be switched off, if its running, and a service center be contacted and headed for immediately. If it is amber, a service facility should still be contacted as soon as possible.

We included it with routine indicators because, as electronics takes over everything, these symbols will indeed become routine due to any problems with starters, start/stop systems and other associated electronics.

Brake Assist System (BAS) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) Fault Indicator

Brake Assist

Slip and Brake Fault IndicatorBrake Assist and Stability Control Fault IndicatorThe picture symbol, and the acronyms in the text fault symbol shown next to it, both mean Brake Assist System (BAS) and Electronic Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), which is a Stability and Traction Control system. Any problem with the Brake Assist System shuts down the ASR, since ASR requires that all brake functions are operating properly for its own proper operation. The picture is of a tire with a double-ended arrow in it meant to suggest the tire and the vehicle it is attached to rolling or moving.

  • But first, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then continue on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The Brake Assist system helps in emergency braking situations when the driver can’t push the brake pedal hard enough. A sensor recognizes the attempt at full braking and transmits the signal calling for full brake pressure from the hydraulic booster reducing the stopping distance.

Remember that these advanced systems come into play in extreme driving conditions, such as rounding a curve excessively fast. The brakes will continue to operate normally with the enhancements shut down. So, your vehicle is safe to drive under most normal conditions. Contact your dealer or authorized repair facility for repairs as soon as possible.

Rear Active Steer (RAS) Fault Indicator

Rear Active Steer

Rear Active Steer Fault IndicatorThis is a Rear Active Steer (RAS) Fault Indicator symbol. When active and working properly, the electronically-controlled system steers the vehicle using all four wheels. The light illuminates if a malfunction occurs in the system, in which case the RAS function will have stopped. The vehicle’s ordinary front steering will operate normally and the vehicle can be driven safely.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!

The RAS will also be turned off – and thus turning the warning light on – if an engine or brake fault is detected. If either the Check Engine or the ABS light is on, address them first with your dealer. The Rear Active Steering will also be disabled if a Traction or Stability Control fault is detected. If these warning lights are active, have them addressed first.

Automatic Transmission Warning Indicators

Automatic Transmission

Automatic Transmission Fault IndicatorAuto transmission check indicatorThese are Automatic Transmission (AT) Warning Indicator symbols. The first symbol indicates an electrical, rather than a mechanical,  problem with the transmission. Continuing to drive could cause damage to the transmission that would likely be very expensive to repair.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The second, AT CHECK has a broader meaning, where any problem with the transmission would generate the warning.

Another Version

Transmission fault indicatorThis also is a Transmission Fault Indicator. It is made to resemble a transmission if seen from the side in yellow/amber. The manufacturer who uses this symbol states that the vehicle can be driven carefully for a short while.

In any of these cases, contact your dealer or authorized service center as soon as possible.

All-wheel Drive Disabled and Fault Indicator Symbols

All Wheel Drive Disabled

All wheel drive disabledAll Wheel Drive DisabledAll wheel drive disabledAWD disable indicatorAll wheel drive failureThese are All-wheel Drive (AWD) Disabled Indicator symbols. The lights, all shown in yellow/amber, flash when the AWD system is disabled temporarily and remains on when there is a malfunction in the system. The open circles indicate that the AWD system has been disconnected.

Note that the first symbol is used in New Zealand and Australia to indicate only that the 4-wheel Drive system has been engaged, and is not used to indicate a problem. Click here for more.

  • Before going on, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.
  • Otherwise return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

All the symbols, except the text version, include a stick figure image meant to look like four wheels with the front wheels turned to the right. The symbols may flash if the vehicle is fitted with tires of differing diameters, a spare tire has been mounted, or if the air pressure in any of the tires drops dramatically. The AWD system will also be unavailable if the anti-lock brake system warning light is on or if the rear differential fluid is overheating. In the latter case, the light will go out when the differential fluid cools.

The AWD system will be unavailable, but the main front or wheel drive wheels will operate normally. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light will also very likely be lit, if the vehicle is equipped with the system.

More Versions

AWD Malfunction IndicatorAll wheel drive failureIf a wrench (or spanner) or exclamation point is shown alongside the caricature of a vehicle’s undercarriage, it indicates a fault and nothing else, as does the text message asking for service. Malfunctions may be indicated by the system before a real problem is obvious, but don’t waste time. See your dealer or authorized service center soon, as AWD repairs are expensive and continued use will increase the likelihood of serious damage.

Electric all wheel drive indicatorElectric all wheel drive trouble indicatorThese text symbols are found in an Electric Vehicle (EV) and become an excuse to add the word electric to the AWD or 4WD acronyms. The first light is yellow/amber when the electric four-wheel drive (e4WD) system is limited, and will turn off when the system is working normally. If this light is red, there is likely a malfunction. But as with all electronic systems, restart the vehicle to see if the system resets.
