Ford symbols page update is finished at last

Ford logoFord symbols

The Ford symbols page update, which we have been working on for several weeks, is at last finished. Why so long? Well, we added a full 75 entries to the page, of which 60 were brand new and needed to be created!

There are now over 150 symbols and indicators on the page.

GOAT Rock Crawl Raptor modeThe worst offenders included G.O.A.T. Mode, courtesy of the new Bronco models, which added a full 14 entries alone! We’ll add one example and a link to the page that needed to be created to accommodate them. G.O.A.T. stands for Goes Over Any-type of Terrain, not wins the most Super Bowls….

Launch control activeSport steering modeSport exhaust modePolice pursuit modeOther “offenders” include Launch Control, from ICE-powered Mustangs with eight new entries; steering and exhaust modes, four each; and Police interceptor modes, also with four new symbols.

One wonders if these modes will be available to just anyone if the vehicle ends up in civilian hands.

There’s no end in sight, and we need to add that many of the symbols, particularly of the drive mode variety, are very similar to others already used by the company and we strongly encourage them to recycle existing symbols and not add more burden to their drivers.

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble — a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

Our page covering Ford indicators, and its 155 entries, can be seen here.

Once again, a Ford manual fail

Ford logoFord manual fail

Unfortunately we found another Ford manual fail, also in the 2024 Escape manual. In this case, a driver might be able to follow a path that will lead to a missing symbol.

In the main list of symbols beginning on page 111, there are a set of EV indicators. When looking at EV Now and EV Later indicators, used to depict Hybrid Drive Modes, the reader is directed to page 274 and 275. Once there however, and brand new icon is seen — EV Auto!

Auto EV indicatorEV later indicatorEV now indicatorIf EV Auto, with the letter A inside, was the first one noted by the driver, he or she would remain in the dark, unless the he or she thought to examine the similar looking EV Now, check mark, and EV Later, clock, versions.

This is simply careless on the part of Ford, and suggests that even they and other manufacturers, are overwhelmed by the absurd number of indicators being developed alongside new systems.

Worse in this case, is that Ford uses very similar looking indicators for charge status as well.

We’ve got another owners manual fail, this one from Ford

Ford logoOwners manual fail

Another owners manual fail. has cropped up during our Ford symbols update. We’ve seen similar oversights in Mazda, Kia and Lincoln manuals as we get through our updates. In essence, we’re finding symbols deep inside the documents that are not shown in the original list of symbols assembled near the beginning of the manual.

This one is a little different as there is one symbol shown early on page 112 to represent a High Voltage Fault, which is not seen again, but is rather replaced deeper in the doc on page 180 by another that is given the same description. The indicators belong to the high voltage battery system associated with the Escape Hybrid.

We’re repeating ourselves here, but this trend needs to end!

The shared description is “It illuminates if your vehicle has an electrical component fault or failure that causes your vehicle to shutdown or enter a limited operating mode. A message may appear in the instrument cluster display.”

Master warning 3EV system failure indicatorThe first one shown is a version of the Master Warning Light, which is a red triangle with an exclamation point inside. The second has become the more traditional EV system failure indicator, which has too many variations, but is essentially a vehicle with an exclamation point inside it.

This is not as large a mistake as other manufacturer’s have made, but it is effectively impossible to know which indicator with appear if a problem occurs. We’ve included both in our list and the EV Warning Page here.

A single model increases the Ford symbols page count by how much??

Ford logoFord symbols page

We have finally finished the first of 13 models, and the single model has increased the Ford symbols page count by 43! Forty three! and a full 37 of them are brand new to our lists. When we started, there were roughly 90 symbols on the page…

It is clearly pointless to show them all here, but we can list them and highlight a couple of standouts. New symbols include four exhaust modes, four steering modes, 14 — yes 14 — G.O.A.T. modes (that’s Goes Over Any-type of Terrain), four trail turn assist symbols, to name a few.

Off road steering modeBaja exhaust modeGenerally, we find ourselves simply adding new symbols to existing pages, but the Bronco required the addition of five new pages for new systems. Exhaust and steering modes for example. We’re showing only one of each.

Trail one pedal drive indicatorThere is even a one-pedal drive page now, as the Bronco is not an EV, where one pedal driving is generally found.

The majority of the new symbols will be found in the information screen and most in black and white. It indicates a shift to added systems that don’t necessarily have a failure or fault symbol in red or yellow/amber/orange.

G.O.A.T. Mode Indicators

G.O.A.T. Mode

GOAT Baja modeGOAT Sand modeGOAT Eco modeGOAT Mud Ruts modeGOAT Normal modeGOAT Rock Crawl modeGOAT Slippery modeGOAT Sport modeGOAT Tow Haul mode

These are a first set of G.O.A.T. Mode Indicator symbols. They belong to the updated 2024 Ford Bronco models. The second set below belong to the Raptor version. Between them are 14 separate images for 16 possible modes! Twelve of the symbols are brand new. The Bronco Sport model does not share the G.O.A.T. system.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Pictographic Symbols page and scan again!

G.O.A.T. means Goes Over Any-type of Terrain. The system offers alterations to steering, traction control, stability control, chassis controls, powertrain response, transmission shift points, four-wheel driveline, exhaust noise level and suspension dampening.

In order left to right they are Baja, Sand, ECO, Mud/Ruts, Normal, Rock/Crawl, Slippery, Sport, and Tow/Haul modes.

GOAT normal Raptor modeGOAT Off Road Raptor modeGOAT Rock Crawl Raptor modeGOAT Slippery Raptor modeGOAT Tow Haul Raptor modeThis second set are additional versions assigned to the Raptor model include left to right Normal, Off Road, Rock/Crawl, Slippery, and Tow/Haul.

The last one seems completely unnecessary as the image differences are completely meaningless. Both are boxes on wheels…

My mode indicatorFinally we have this, which a My Mode Indicator. A driver can choose from the list above, add steering, exhaust and suspension options, which can then be saved for easy recall. A double press of the steering wheel button activates the saved mode.

The more detailed explanations of each mode below apply to both the standard and Raptor models.

  • Baja Mode optimizes the throttle control for better response and torque delivery for high speed off-road driving.
  • Sand Mode is for off-road driving on soft, dry sand or deep snow and may help get your vehicle unstuck.
  • ECO mode helps deliver maximum fuel efficiency and helps to increase driving range.
  • Mud/Ruts Mode enhances performance in muddy, rutted or uneven terrains.
  • Normal Mode is everyday driving and is the default mode at start up.
  • Rock Crawl Mode is for off-road driving and optimum rock-climbing ability, optimizing throttle and transmission response for additional control.
  • Slippery Mode is for crossing terrain where a firm surface is covered with loose or slippery material, such as snow or ice.
  • Sport Mode is for driving with improved performance handling and response.
  • Tow/Haul Mode improves transmission operation when towing a trailer or a heavy load.

Consult the  vehicle’s owner’s manual for far more detailed information.

And if you are seeing one of these symbols unexpectedly, the system has likely been activated accidentally. Restart the vehicle to return to its default mode.

Exhaust mode indicator symbols

Exhaust mode

Normal exhaust modeBaja exhaust modeQuiet exhaust modeSport exhaust modeThese are Exhaust Mode Indicator symbols. They are an exclusive from Ford and found in new Bronco Raptor models as part of the vehicle’s G.O.A.T modes. That is Goes Over Any-type of Terrain (G.O.A.T.) modes.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Pictographic Symbols page and scan again!

The exhaust modes literally change the amount of noise emanating from the vehicle. The first one shown, from the left, is Normal mode, where the setting is said to provide a balance of comfort and feedback. Next, showing a cactus plant as a hint, is Baja mode, which is the loudest setting that will likely earn you a ticket for excess noise used anywhere but off-road.

Next up is Quiet mode, which is obviously the quietest setting for comfort under all driving conditions. And then finally there is Sport more which adds a little noise for “spirited driving”.

Just as our roads are getting quieter with the advance of electric cars…

As a final note, a Bronco driver can choose Quiet start, which allows a schedule of exhaust modes in a time window from 1 to 24 hours.

Drive mode craze hits new heights

Drive mode

We’ve begun an update of our Ford dashboard symbols page, and drive more additions immediately took center stage.

We have 12 models to cover, and we take it in alphabetical order and this all we’ve looked at is the Bronco. It was soon clear that I would have to add no less than nine new (to Ford) drive modes.

Then there is the Rapter version — not to mention the Bronco Sport that we have yet to even open — which will include four exhaust modes, seven G.O.A.T modes, four steering modes, three suspension modes, and a My mode, where some arrangement of the previous modes are saved as a preference.

That’s 21 new symbols to add to Ford from a single model! We expect two or three from a model, but 21? And 3/4 of these will be brand new to our Special Modes Page.

Additions to the page aside, when did owning a car shift to requiring a week’s worth of study??

And G.O.A.T. mode? That’s Goes Over Any-type of Terrain mode, clearly nothing more than an attempt to be more clever the competition. We’re not sure “who encourages this”, “who benefits from this”, or “who”, if anyone, actually “likes this”. We left out “who requires this” because clearly no one does!

Drive mode changes generally occur via a button on the steering wheel or on the center console. The issue is the number of times drivers accidently change a driver mode, which can sometimes cause operating issues. Accidentally hitting a mode that involves all four wheels can actually cause damage to a vehicles drive train.

And this ignores the panic drivers feel if and when a vehicle is not behaving as expected.

Mud and sand mode indicatorMud & Sand mode indicatorAt some point it the proliferation of drive modes has to stop. Is Mud/Sand mode really that different from other off road modes? And do the pictographs do this justice? Here, do the pictures really speak loader than words??

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.
