Security Indicator SymbolImmobilizer System IndicatorThese are Security and/or Immobilizer System Indicator symbols used by auto manufacturers. One of these symbols is illuminated momentarily to indicate that the ignition switch is locked and will need the proper transponder-equipped key  fob to start or re-start. The vehicle is immobilized otherwise. Green symbols will flash when the vehicle is immobilized.

Text Security IndicatorSecurity theft indicatorSecurity Lock IndicatorThe text symbols Security or Theft, shown to the left have largely been replaced by the padlocked car image shown next to it, both in red. Their operation is the same as those above, with one exception. One manufacturer (Alfa Romeo), also uses the padlock image in yellow/amber to warn of an attempted break in!

Immobilizer dotHowever, if any of these symbols is visible when the vehicle is operating, it indicates a malfunction in the security system. The red dot to the left is on old style indicator. If the engine does not start with the correct key, and the security indicator remains on or flashes, the system may have a malfunction. You will need to contact your dealer or authorized service center in either case.

Hybrid Ready Indicator Symbols

Ready Mode IndicatorHybrid Ready IndicatorReady indicatorThese are Hybrid Ready Indicator symbols. These indicators effectively tell a driver when a hybrid vehicle will respond to the accelerator. This is a replacement of sorts for the sound of a running gasoline engine, since in many cases, the gasoline engine will not be needed on start up.

Ready + indicatorThis symbol is similar to the first one above, with and added letter ‘S’ and a plus (+) sign. It indicates that the vehicle is ready as well as being in Sport mode. Click here for more.

The vehicle’s Ready indicator can be activated when the key fob is present, the vehicle is in park and the start or power button is pushed when the brake pedal is depressed. Cold weather may slow the appearance of the indicator.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Operation Indicator

EV Operation Indicator SymbolThis is the (Electric Vehicle) EV Operation Indicator symbol, found in hybrid vehicles. Most hybrid vehicles give the driver the option to choose to use only the electric motor(s), at least in special situations.

  • But first, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then continue on below.

This symbol will appear on the instrument panel when a switch – likely showing the same symbol – is activated.

The vehicle will revert to “normal” operation when the accelerator pedal is depressed hard or quickly, when the speed gets high enough or when the hybrid battery’s power gets too low.
